Position: Engineering Technologist, Mechanical
Shift: Regular Full-Time, 40 hours a week
Department: Composites Manufacturing and Engineering
Location: Richmond, B.C., Canada
Reports to: Manager, Composites Development Engineering
Purpose:
Whitewater’s Composites Manufacturing and Engineering (CME) department is looking for an Engineering Technologist, Mechanical to join their team! Reporting to the Manager, Composites Development Engineering, you will be an integral member of the team and responsible to support the design and manufacturing of new and existing products and components. The technical support will be provided to functional groups involved with the entire spectrum of composite related product lifecycles. Daily duties may include, but not be limited to, modeling and drafting, documentation creation and management, test lab related activities to support Composites Development Engineering team.
Essential Responsibilities:
Create and/or modify engineering drawings and CAD models of composite products used for manufacturing in SolidWorks in accordance with the engineering standards. Work with project leads or manager in support of generating technical data deliverables related to composite part manufacturing on time and in budget. Stay up to date on manufacturing methods and tools available at various manufacturing partners in order to understand and evolve best drafting practices for fabrication drawings. Develop accurate cost models of composite parts utilizing available commercial tools and manufacturing data. Plan and execute various materials testing activities under direct supervision of engineer and report results in accordance with specified engineering standards. Support test specimen fabrication activities as well as test specimen preparation for testing, as required, via communication with applicable manufacturers. Sort and manage test data while continuously developing the composite material properties library. Perform maintenance of test lab, including preventative maintenance of all equipment for sustaining operational excellency. Participate in development activities of new composite materials and products in accordance with the research and development plans released by the engineering staff. Contribute to the development of departmental procedures for improving productivity and efficiency.
Qualifications & Experience:
Minimum educational requirement: Diploma in Engineering Technology or equivalent with minimum 2 years of practical experience. Excellent communication skills in verbal and written form with ability to generate technical documentation as required. Proficiency with SolidWorks and PDM systems – experience with 2D/3D modeling software packages is a must. Experience with both surface and solid modeling is an asset. Understanding of tolerance analysis and knowledge of GD&T are assets. Knowledge of engineering material, manufacturing, and testing/evaluation procedures per ASTM is considered an asset. Knowledge and experience about composite manufacturing processes such as Hand Layup, Spray Layup, Open Mold (OM), Resin Transfer Molding (RTM) and Vacuum Assisted Resin Transfer Molding (VARTM), is considered an asset. Experience of material and process qualification is an asset. Strong problem solving, technical writing, presentation, and interpersonal skills are considered asset. Ability to develop and maintain effective internal working relationships with all levels in the organization and external clients. Able to work both in a team/matrix environment and independently with minimal supervision. Must be legally eligible to work in Canada with minimum travel restrictions.
