Enterprise Data Architect

At Genentech Research & Early Development (gRED) we have initiated an exciting journey to realize the potential of data, technology and computational approaches that will revolutionize how targets and therapeutics are discovered and developed, ultimately enabling novel treatments for patients across the world.The Infrastructure & Architect (I&A) group’s mission is to empower gRED to transform its approach to scientific discovery by providing technical leadership, engineering, and technical support while delivering efficient access to secure, compliant, and performant storage and computational resources. This position will be reporting to the Head of Engineering for I&A, and will closely partner with the Enterprise Architect for gRED Computational Sciences. 

The Enterprise Data Architect role will have a pivotal and influential leadership role in the strategy, design and execution of the data ecosystem and the data foundation of gRED and the broader Roche organization. We are looking for an Enterprise Data Architect to join our team that is an experienced and a highly credible visionary and technical leader with the proven ability to deliver, form collaborative partnerships and foster an engaging team culture built on trust. You will be accountable for building strong collaborative relationships with stakeholders and technical leaders across gRED and the Roche Group and will leverage these partnerships to lead the design and implementation of the data ecosystem that underpins the flow, access, and sharing of data within gRED and across Roche. 

Through strategic vision and expert leadership, you will shape the development of innovative data solutions and will drive the team’s success in delivering these solutions. You will have deep expertise and hands-on experience of data & software engineering and be familiar with modern and cutting-edge approaches. Your leadership will ensure that data is structured effectively and integrated seamlessly into various downstream applications, such as large scale machine learning models, including foundational models. 

Onsite presence, on our South San Francisco campus, is expected for at least 3 days a week.

The Opportunity:

● Establish a data foundation, including design, architecture, and deployment of a federated data architecture, and collaborate across the organization on governance policies, data quality standards, and security practices. 

● Work closely with internal stakeholders, including scientists, data engineers, and leadership to gather requirements, establish data needs, and ensure alignment with business objectives. 

● Identifying key trends, technologies, methodologies and influence their adoption 

● Understand and influence technical decisions around data acquisition, collection, storage, transformation, linkage and sharing while working collaboratively with our key partners 

● Deliver on the goal of bringing diverse sets of data together to support a wide range of activities such as AI/ML, search, reporting, and analytics 

● Lead by example to establish and demonstrate our gCS values: impact, collaboration, diversity, scientific excellence and curiosity 

Who You Are:

● Advanced degree in Computer Science, Life Sciences or related fields, or equivalent experience 

● 12 years of experience in data architecture and software engineering, including 7+ years of working experience in a leadership role in the life science industry 

● Proven experience in enterprise architecture, including strategic planning, technology alignment, and design of complex data mesh and data solutions 

● In-depth understanding of federated data architectures (such as data mesh) versus traditional centralized data architectures, and experience in helping establish data management capabilities such as metadata management, lineage, data governance, data discovery, and data quality. 

● Hands on with programming languages such as Python, and experience with concepts such as: SQL, NoSQL, ETL, ELT, Data Lakes, Data Warehouses, Event Streaming, Data Fabric, Data Mesh, search, GraphQL, DevOps, MLOps 

● Deep expertise with AWS (e.g., S3, Redshift, Glue, Athena, Lambda) 

● Experience influencing, motivating and aligning others towards common technical decisions and leverages shared ownership as appropriate. 

● Strong oral and written communication skills

The expected salary range for this position based on the primary location of California is $207,800 - $385,800 of hiring range.  Actual pay will be determined based on experience, qualifications, geographic location, and other job-related factors permitted by law.  A discretionary annual bonus may be available based on individual and Company performance.  This position also qualifies for the benefits detailed at the link provided below.
