Entry Level Ecologist(Bamboo Data Collection/Invasive Plant Management) in Fairfax, VA 22035
Position: Entry Level Ecologist(Bamboo Data Collection/I nvasive Plant Management) Location: Fairfax, VA 22035 Duration: 12 months Contract to Hire Shift Timing : 8:30 to 4:30 Interview mode : Virtual, 1-2 round Ecological Technician to assist with invasive plant management, habitat restoration and education & outreach. This position will join the Natural Resource Management (NRB) BOur staff is responsible for the management, protection, and stewardship of natural resources of approximately 24,000 acres on parkland in Fairfax County, VA. The Ecological Technician will serve as an integral team member supporting the NRB’s work, specifically within the Invasive Management Area (IMA) program. The Ecological Technician will amplify our professional contractor’s efforts by providing supplemental herbicide applications and overseeing contractor quality control. Tasks will also include surveying parkland for invasives, monitoring restoration projects and recording spatial data. Volunteer training and management are key components of the position, along with community outreach and education. Applicants should be mature, self-motivated, highly organized, and comfortable working either alone or as a team member in both the field and office. Responsibilities of the Ecological Technician include: + Control invasive plants using manual control techniques and/or herbicides + Collect and manage spatial data using handheld devices/GPS units/desktop computers + Monitor current and future restoration projects + Maintain care of restoration plantings, which may include watering + Perform non-native invasive plant species assessments on parkland + Identify native and non-native plants + Participate in volunteer invasive plant removal events + Organize, deliver, and procure tools and supplies + Update and distribute outreach materials (print & digital) + Outreach to staff and citizens on invasive species issues + Development of written and oral reports + Analyzes program data to plan future priorities and projects + Serve as team lead for seasonal employee(s) and/or volunteers + Other tasks as assigned Minimum Qualifications: + Experience in natural resource management. Some education in natural resource management or environmental sciences. + Advanced knowledge of invasive plant identification. Preferred Qualifications: + Pesticide Applicators License or Registered Technician Certification or to be completed within first six months in position. + Experience with Geographic Information Systems (GIS)
