POSITION SUMMARY

The entry-level Mechanical/Industrial Piping Estimator will be tasked primarily with the preparation of discipline-specific estimates supporting large multi-discipline efforts or smaller independent estimates. This position primarily focuses on mechanical/metal trades consisting of structural steel for pipe supports, piping, welding and boiler making. This position will be responsible for building estimates that include installation, demo and modifications to mechanical and piping systems, and structural steel erection related to mechanical / pipe supports.

Evaluates all contract documents including all bid drawings, specifications, general conditions and if necessary, visits the project site. Ability to identify and quantify piping materials, valves, piping specialty items, piping instruments, and typical pipe supports. Ability to read and understand the scope of work, pipe specifications, and perform quantity takeoff for piping and mechanical systems. List items taken off from piping documents on a standard takeoff sheet and categorize said items by their proper pipe specification. Read a client provided piping bill of materials. Read and takeoff items shown on Process and Instrument Diagrams (P&IDs). Read and takeoff items shown on piping isometric drawings. The candidate must be able to understand the drawing shown from a constructability standpoint, not just the items listed in the bill of materials. Read and takeoff items shown on piping orthographic (plan) drawings. Organize the take-off process to conform to the bid breakdown forms and submittals. Estimate small piping projects with minimal documentation based on field experience. Visualize what is not apparent or missing from project documentation and make efforts to mitigate those potential risks. Maintain a list of clarifications, assumptions, and qualifications identified as risks and discrepancies are detected during development of proposals. Assist with determining installation schemes to establish project schedule, and duration, crew sizing, and ability to quantify geographical challenges, etc. Application of company historical rate and production information for estimates. Basic understanding of trades other than piping including paint, insulation, scaffolding, etc. Review available plans and specifications to make sure estimated materials are compliant. Prepare and issue bid package to subcontractors for trades we do not self-perform (Electrical, Civil, Plumbing, Fabrication/erection of large steel structures, Third Party Weld Testing, Painting, Passivation, etc.). Solicit pricing from material vendors and subcontractors. Coordinate with other team members when working on larger multi-discipline estimates. Communication with Senior Managers - Communicate critical issues and estimate assumptions up to the Manager as they arise to ensure everyone is on the same page for the reviews to eliminate late changes. Ensure compliance with Alberici QA/QC and safety standards as well as client and industry requirements. Ensure estimates are complete, well organized, and ready for review by management. Develop project schedules with emphasis on pipe erection; write execution plans as required. Research and develop innovative means and methods. Prepare proposals, when necessary, in conjunction with business development resources. Identifies vague scope requirements or areas of question/concern to qualify bids. On successful bids coordinate with operations teams to provide a thorough transition and turnover of the estimate. Assists project management staff with pricing issues on major project revisions after award. Process and manage large number of documents and data, organized to allow recall of work breakdowns, sketches, and other information to substantiate the pricing estimate.

Education and Experience

Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Architecture, Construction Management, or related technical field AND internship/apprentice related experience and/or training OR equivalent education and experience.
