Environmental, Social and Governance Director

POSITION SUMMARY:

The Environmental, Social and Governance Director will be responsible for developing, implementing, and maintaining MSD’s environmental, social, and governance and sustainability functions.  The employee will provide cross-departmental leadership in developing strategy, providing technical expertise and on-going oversight, and leading the development of policies and procedures that incorporate applicable best industry practices/standards and global requirements.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: 

• Drive the development and maturation of MSD’s overall ESG function.

• Secure senior level commitment and support for integrating environmental sustainability into the organization's processes. 

• Lead development of ESG policies, procedures, and system(s) in collaboration with internal stakeholders across the organization.

• Evaluate effectiveness of the ESG program by driving improvement in the organization’s ratings as measured by standard ESG frameworks and raters. 

• Function as a subject matter expert on ESG topics with internal and external stakeholders; provide mentoring and facilitation for leaders and teams to support implementation of ESG policies and procedures. 

• Collect accurate ESG-related data.

• Develop and publish periodic ESG internal and external reporting. 

• Act as project manager for the development and submission of MSD’s annual ESG reporting for Eco Vadis and CDP to include coordinating with MSD data custodians across all business units and external resources.

• Monitor ESG disclosure standards (e.g., GRI, SASB, TCFD, and UN SDGs) as well as key ESG ratings, rankings, surveys, and investor requests to ensure alignment; track emerging ESG regulations and trends; and develop strategies to address them across the business.

• Develop and manage an ESG reporting system and metrics dashboard for ongoing tracking.

• Perform qualitative landscape/benchmarking studies on corporate sustainability programs, goals, disclosures, performance, and rankings, with corresponding data collection and analysis for MSD’s ESG reporting, industry research, and data management needs.

• Other duties as assigned.

EXPERIENCE AND QUALIFICATIONS:

• Minimum of a bachelor’s degree in a related field.  Advanced degree or professional certification preferred.

• A minimum of eight years of experience in the ESG field with two years in a leadership position.

• Project management required. 

• Some supervisory experience preferred.

• Experience establishing an ESG/Sustainability function strongly preferred.

• Experience in the fields of bio-technology, manufacturing, hardware/software development strongly preferred.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

• Extensive knowledge of ESG reporting frameworks and methodologies including CDP and Eco Vadis as well as of GRI, SASB, and TCFD.

• Superior demonstrated collaboration and leadership skills with knowledge and experience in leading cross-business unit collaborations.

• Ability to build/foster relationships.

• Superior communication (written and verbal) skills with the ability to translate complex information into a meaningful, understandable message, regardless of the format (e.g., documents, public speaking situations, presentations, etc.). Ability to write and communicate clearly and concisely.

• Demonstrated critical thinking and analytical skills, as well as the ability to handle complex situations and demonstrate sound judgment and problem-solving.

• Organizational, project, and priority management skills for planning, executing and following up on issues, projects and daily responsibilities in order to meet established deadlines

• Technical proficiency in the use of Microsoft Office (i.e., Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook).

• Strong familiarity with Eco Vadis and CDP and reasonable proficiency with their interfaces and procedures.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

While performing the duties of this job, the individual is frequently required to sit at a computer for long periods. The individual is occasionally required to walk; use hands and fingers to operate, handle, or feel objects, tools, or controls; reach with hands and arms. 

WORK ENVIRONMENT:

This position is performed in an office environment.

COMPENSATION SUMMARY:

The annual base salary for this position ranges from $128,300. to $200,500. This salary range represents a general guideline as MSD considers other factors when presenting an offer of employment, such as scope and responsibilities of the position, external market factors, and the candidate’s knowledge, skills, abilities, education and experience. Employees may qualify for a discretionary or non-discretionary bonus in addition to their base salary. These annual bonuses are intended to recognize individual performance and enable employees to benefit from the Company's overall success.
