Environmental Air Quality Engineer

Curia provides global contract research and manufacturing services to the pharmaceutical and biotechnology industries.

The Environmental Air Quality Engineer ensures regulatory compliance with current and emerging regulations.  This position will implement and maintain air and other environmental management systems and programs at Curia’s Rensselaer site.  The incumbent will be responsible for ensuring regulatory compliance and meeting required regulatory submittal deadlines. This position involves activities such as: performing environmental compliance assessments, completing plant walkdowns and inspections, documenting compliance status, making recommendations to help achieve compliance, and providing and/or facilitating training on compliance management requirements, as needed. Proven capability in communicating with diverse levels of regulatory personnel in different disciplines including air and others as required. The individual will coordinate their responsibilities with the respective Rensselaer Department Managers, Senior EHS Manager and the General Manager at the Rensselaer site.

Essential job duties

Primary duties will include preparing emission inventories, analyzing data, evaluating pollution control options, estimating costs, and writing technical reports. Compile emissions data files for air dispersion modeling. Conduct regulatory applicability evaluations and assess regulatory compliance Ability to explain complex permitting or technical requirements in an easy to comprehend manner. Assists with the planning and implementation of a site-wide environmental compliance program Interpret environmentally regulated programs, complete reporting and recommend/implement actions where necessary Provide support as necessary to the site EHS leader to ensure compliance with all Federal, State, Local and Curia environmental requirements Assists with monitoring and maintaining compliance with New York State DEC regulations and Federal EPA regulations Coordinates training for employees on environmental regulations Coordinates technical assistance programs and resources with other assistance providers and groups Develops fact sheets, newsletters, guidebooks, and other tools to inform company executives of environmental compliance and waste minimization Manage external contractors to ensure appropriate support is being provided to adhere to compliance requirements. Must maintain, uphold, and practice safety per company standards at all times Conducts regular audits to identify potential weaknesses and non-compliance situations Communicate with employees to make sure everyone is aware of what they need to do to comply with internal and external laws and regulations

Education, experience, certification and licensures

Required

Bachelor’s degree in Chemical Engineering, Environmental Engineering or related field Minimum 5 years’ experience in EHS regulations and policies, specifically Air Permitting such as Title V programs Experience managing environmental compliance tasks Experience working with New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (preferred)

Knowledge, skills and abilities

Regulatory program experience Clean Air Act including Air Emissions Inventories, Permitting, and Compliance; Emergency Planning and Community Right-to-Know Act (EPCRA)  Understanding of Reasonably Available Control Technology and efficiency testing methods/processes. Must possess excellent oral and written communication skills Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals Ability to write routine reports and correspondence Ability to speak effectively before groups of customers or employees of organization Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form

Incumbent may be required to obtain/qualify for and maintain the clearance to wear a respirator at a “class B” level or above following OSHA mandated guidelines.

Pay Range:  $83,000 - $104,000

Education, experience, location and tenure may be considered along with internal equity when job offers are extended.
