Our work impacts every aspect of people's lives and is critical to the health and wellbeing of our residents and visitors. MassDEP is the lead agency for safe management of toxics and hazardous materials, promotion of waste reduction and recycling, preservation of the state's wetlands and coastal resources, air quality monitoring and pollution reduction, and so much more. MassDEP seeks applicants for a NATTS and NCore Site Operator (Environmental Analyst III) position within the Bureau of Air and Waste, Division of Air and Climate Programs. This position is full-time and is assigned to the Air Assessment Branch (AAB) located at MassDEP’s Wall Experiment Station, 37 Shattuck Street, Lawrence MA. The workplace is a hybrid work model that combines working in the office, in the field, and remotely. Under the supervision of the Field Supervisor, or his/her designee, the Environmental Analyst III will provide support to the statewide ambient air monitoring program to ensure operations are executed in accordance with applicable regulations, guidance and policies. *Specific duties for this position include, but are not limited to:* * Operate air monitoring sites containing continuous and non-continuous monitoring equipment. Conduct calibrations, perform Quality Control (QC) data validation procedures, troubleshoot problems, and perform maintenance and repair on the monitoring equipment. Ensure that SOPs and EPA guidelines are followed. Ensure that data is electronically transferred to the main office and that all activities are documented in the site logbook. * Operate complex air sampling equipment associated with parameters measured in EPA sanctioned monitoring programs including the National Air Toxics Trends Stations (NATTS), Chemical Speciation Network (CSN) which includes the Speciation Trend Network (STN), and NCore (trace pollutants) monitoring. Setup, collect and ship samples from these enhanced monitoring samplers. * Coordinate with contract laboratories to schedule sample delivery via third-party carriers, replenish supplies, and resolve complications. * Package and ship samples according to strict timing, temperature, and documentation requirements. * Exercise technical supervision and schedule duties as required for personnel (including EA II’s) who assist with routine and enhanced monitoring projects. * Train other site analysts (including EA II’s) in ambient air monitoring techniques (including, but not limited to PM2.5Speciation monitoring and NATTS monitoring). * Coordinate with government, academic, and community organizations to facilitate collocation of low-cost air sensors and accommodate tours at the NATTS and NCore Site. * Write reports on air monitoring activities and make recommendations regarding improvements to operations and procedures. * Operate, develop, and maintain various computer programs including data acquisition software and MS Office used for data calculation and reporting. * Participate in support of other air monitoring projects as assigned. * Perform mathematical and other scientific calculations required in the performance of ambient air monitoring. * Complete and submit administrative tasks accurately and in a timely manner according to a prescribed schedule. * Transport and use portable equipment weighing up to 50 pounds; assist in site moving and modification projects. * Collect and install biological air monitoring samples at several fixed locations in and around the Boston area for delivery to the Department of Public Health laboratory in Jamaica Plain. * Assist in the installation of health and safety (H&S) improvements to existing air monitoring stations. * Other activities in support of AAB operations as necessary. * * *Preferred Qualifications:* * Knowledge of air pollution science, regulations, monitoring methods, and quality assurance (QA) procedures. * Experience conducting air monitoring operations in accordance with an EPA approved Quality Assurance Project Plan (QAPP) and associated Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs). * Experience operating EPA reference and equivalent method air quality monitors, including gaseous analyzers and particulate samplers. * Experience with routine analyzer QA tasks in a field environment, including multi-point verifications, calibrations, flow checks, and preventative maintenance. * Experience reviewing large quantities of numerical data to identify and investigate anomalies. * Experience completing minor repairs to gaseous analyzers and particulate samplers. * Ability to assess and repair mechanical malfunctions in support equipment. * Ability to use hand tools, climb ladders, work on roof tops, move equipment and compressed gas cylinders and other equipment up to 50 lbs. in weight. * Proven ability to meet deadlines and prioritize multiple responsibilities. * Ability to express ideas clearly orally and in the written form. * Initiative and ability to work independently while also interacting effectively in a team environment. * Basic computer skills, including a working knowledge and experience with Microsoft Outlook, Microsoft Word, and Microsoft Excel. * Possession of a valid driver’s license. *First consideration will be given to those applicants that apply within the first 14 days.* ** *MINIMUM ENTRANCE REQUIREMENTS: * Applicants must have at least (A) four years of full-time, or equivalent part-time, technical or professional experience in the field of environmental science, biology, chemistry, earth science, environmental health, meteorology, natural science, toxicology or public health, of which (B) at least two years must have been in a professional capacity, or (C) any equivalent combination of the required experience and the substitutions below. *Substitutions: * I. An Associate's degree with a major in the field of environmental science, biology, chemistry, earth science, environmental health, meteorology,. natural science, toxicology or public health may be substituted for a maximum of one year of the required (A) experience.* II. A Bachelor's degree with a major in the field of environmental science, biology, chemistry, earth science, environmental health, meteorology, natural science, toxicology or public health may be substituted for a maximum of two years of the required (A) experience.* III. A Graduate degree with a major in the field of environmental science, biology, chemistry, earth science, environmental health, meteorology, natural science, toxicology or public health may be substituted for a maximum of three years of the required (A) experience and one year of the required (B) experience.* *Education toward such a degree will be prorated on the basis of the proportion of the requirements actually completed.
