Description
Environmental Epidemiologist
The Environmental Epidemiologist will play a crucial role in investigating and addressing environmental health concerns within the City of Detroit. This position involves conducting epidemiological research, analyzing data, and developing strategies to mitigate public health risks related to environmental factors.
Examples of Duties
• Conduct epidemiological investigations to identify and evaluate environmental health risks and their impact on the community.
• Design and implement studies to monitor and assess the health effects of environmental exposures, such as air and water quality, hazardous waste, and occupational hazards.
• Analyze and interpret data from multiple sources, including public health records, environmental monitoring systems, and community surveys.
• Develop and maintain surveillance systems to track environmental health trends and disease outbreaks.
• Collaborate with public health officials, community organizations, and other stakeholders to develop and implement public health interventions and policies.
• Prepare and present reports, publications, and presentations to communicate findings and recommendations to both technical and non-technical audiences.
• Provide technical assistance and guidance to other public health professionals and community partners on environmental health issues.
• Participate in emergency preparedness and response activities related to environmental health hazards.
• Stay updated with current research, trends, and best practices in environmental epidemiology and public health.
Minimum Qualifications
• Master of Public Health (MPH) degree or its equivalent with a focus on epidemiology, environmental health, or a related field.
• Strong analytical and statistical skills, with proficiency in epidemiological methods and software (e.g., SAS, R, ArcGIS).
• Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to convey complex information clearly and effectively.
• Experience in conducting field investigations and working with diverse communities.
• Knowledge of local, state, and federal environmental health regulations and guidelines.
• Ability to work both independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team.
Preferred Qualifications:
• Prior experience in an urban public health setting.
• Familiarity with geographic information systems (GIS) and spatial analysis techniques.

This is a grant-funded position. The continuation of this role depends on the availability of ongoing funding. Employment beyond the current grant period is not guaranteed and will be based on the renewal of funding.

The City of Detroit is pleased to continue to provide a medical plan option to our Administrative Special Services Employees for the 2020 plan year. This plan is provided by Blue Care Network of Michigan and utilizes their PCP Focus Network. This plan provides you with the opportunity to receive an enhanced level of benefits and pay less out of your paycheck for your medical plan. There are two important requirements that you should consider and understand if you should decide to enroll in this plan. You will have to choose a primary care physician that serves within the PCP Focus network. This primary care physician coordinates your care. The network includes over 22,000 Primary Care Physicians. There are also Wellness Requirements that you (the subscriber) must meet in order to remain in the enhanced level of benefit.
Administrative Special Services Staff (Exempt) are eligible for the following benefits:
+ CURRENT SICK LEAVE – Granted (3) months of continuous service. (1) day per month, not to exceed (12) days per year.
+ VACATION – Granted (1) day per pay period, not to exceed 20 days per fiscal year
+ PAID HOLIDAYS – Granted if paid for 600 straight time hours in the (12) months prior to the holiday
+ MILEAGE REIMBURSEMENT - Granted on same basis as regular employees.
+ WORKERS COMPENSATION – Covered by applicable laws.
+ UNEMPLOYMENT COMPENSATION - Covered by applicable laws.
+ HOSPITALIZATION – You are eligible to purchase healthcare benefits for yourself and your dependents under a group rate. You will be responsible for the full premium, no employer contribution will be applied. Please review the Health Care Plan Options Booklet for more detailed information.
+ This position is not eligible for the City Pension Plan, dental, vision, optical, death, life, disability, funeral, reserve sick or jury duty.
