Environmental Graphic Designer

The Creative Services team at the University of Virginia's Facilities Management is seeking an energetic and collaborative Environmental Graphic Designer to create informative and visually inspiring graphics as well as help incorporate the new wayfinding and signage system across the University.

Reporting to the assistant director of Creative Services, the ideal candidate can strategically conceptualize a whole project, design individual custom elements, and produce interior sign packages for new and renovated building projects. She/he/they have a range of both creative and technical experience, is/are a highly motivated problem solver, and can manage a diverse project load and client base. Projects are multifaceted and highly collaborative, so a self-driven, organized, cooperative, and flexible attitude is necessary.

Responsibilities:

Develop creative design solutions that are in line with project goals and understand their impact on cost, production and other variables.

Oversee the end-to-end creative process, from conceptualization to execution, while collaborating with clients, other designers, interior designers, space managers, project managers and sign production professionals.

Manage multiple design and/or sign projects at various stages of development.

Create mockup 2D graphics for the built environment, using Illustrator and/or Photoshop.

Research and integrate art, experience design, new materials, technologies and building methods into design ideas.

Develop interior wayfinding/sign packages for new and renovated buildings.

Lead visioning sessions, design critiques and client meetings.

Coordinate with project managers, sign production/installation professionals and vendors to ensure the quality and timely delivery/installation of design solutions and sign packages.

Conduct site visits, surveys and inspections to verify the accuracy and compliance of environmental graphics and/or signage with the project requirements and standards.

Maintain strong client communication throughout the entire design and installation process.

Assist with traditional design jobs during downtime in experiential projects.

Education and Experience:

Bachelor’s degree in Graphic Design, Environmental Design or related field. In lieu of a degree, a high school diploma with at least four years of experience in the experiential design field.

Minimum three years of experience working in the fields of wayfinding/signage and experiential design.

Highly collaborative and experience working with other graphic designers, architects, project managers, engineers, fabricators, and clients.

Ability to quickly communicate concept ideas through sketches, diagrams and/or mood boards.

Strong written and verbal communication skills, including client presentations.

Experience in developing interior wayfinding/signage packages.

Curiosity to learn more and push boundaries of artistic expression and fabrication. A true lifelong learner.

Deep understanding of brand narrative and visual storytelling.

Knowledge of Universal Design and ADA standards.

Must be able to read floor plans and determine sign type, quantity and placement.

Advanced Adobe CC program skills (Illustrator, Photoshop, etc.)

The successful candidate will be required to pass the required background checks.

Compensation:

The Anticipated Minimum Salary for this position is $67,000 Annually. This is a full-time position with UVA benefits. Employee benefits package highlights include:
