Environmental Health & Safety Specialist
The Environmental Health & Safety Specialist would oversee the EHS responsibilities of the Columbus, Ohio Refinery. In conjunction with and cooperation with the Regional EHS Manager, the incumbent will be tasked in overseeing workplace safety, training compliance, environmental and H&S regulatory compliance, incident management and more. The EHS Specialist will ensure compliance throughout all Company H&S Policies and will work directly with both hourly and salaried site personnel to improve our overall safety culture and will play an important role in maintaining the EHS culture. The EHS Specialist may at times be assigned tasks and special projects that could expand beyond the responsibilities of the Columbus Refinery.

Key Responsibilities:
• Maintain and implement environmental compliance programs, contingency plans and best management programs.

• Assist in the implementation of occupational health and safety programs meant to ensure the wellbeing of employees, contractors or visitors.

• Ensures compliance with applicable environmental regulations and standards, including active site permits, storm water plans and underground /aboveground storage tanks.

• Audits and assist in the proper documentation and investigation of accidents or injuries, and guides implementation of corrective measures meant to reduce future risk.

• Tracks participation in environmental, health and safety related training.

• Maintain a working knowledge of safety theory, regulations and Company policy.

• Conduct specialized training.

• Review the record keeping process and branch filing for safety meetings, training records, and other EHS related areas.

• Conduct random audits.

• Conduct observations from a variety of perspectives including blind observations.

• Maintain a working knowledge of basic environmental principles and standards.

• Evaluate facility conditions which require the application or changes in permit.

• Communicate with federal and state environmental agencies for permit applications, modifications, or renewals.

• Review Stormwater Pollution Prevention Plans on annual basis for compliance with federal and state regulations.

• Coordinate the sampling of storm water and/or its contracting from an outside source

• Attend safety, transportation and environmental classes for continuing education.

• Seek ways to minimize accident/injury frequencies and severe losses to the Company.

• Conform in all respects with applicable federal, state and local laws, regulations, ordinances and other orders and to all company policies, procedures and directives from supervisors.

• Perform other duties and responsibilities as required or requested by management.

Requirements:

• Four (4) year degree or experience in safety, environmental management or technology.

• Two (2) years’ experience in risk management or related field.

• Possess valid state driver’s license with good driving record.

• Combination of education and/or experience.

• Operate standard office equipment.

• Working knowledge of Microsoft Office applications (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) and Microsoft Outlook.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

• Ability to write moderate level correspondence to employees, management and vendors via internal and external memorandums and reports.

• Ability to effectively present information to management or others in a group or individual setting.

• Ability to follow instructions and work under limited supervision and heavy deadlines.

• Ability to effectively communicate with others.

Physical/Mental Demands:
• Ability to sit, stand, walk, talk, use hands and fingers, stoop, kneel and reach.

• Ability to lift/push/pull up to 15 pounds up to 1/3 of the time.

Working Conditions:

• Work in indoor environment 60% of the time.

• Environmental noise level is usually moderate to loud.

• Occasionally exposed to loud noise, humidity, hot and cold weather conditions, moving mechanical parts, vibration, toxic and caustic chemicals, fumes and airborne particles.

• Early morning start times are occasional to frequent.

• Occasional travel to other regions required.
