Environmental Scientist

Stantec is an international, multidisciplinary firm, providing services to a wide base of clients across the globe. Our environmental group in Coral Gables, Florida is seeking an Environmental Scientist to join our Team. Our group is dedicated to managing the environmental components of projects for Federal, State and local agency clients, primarily within the South Florida region, with a heavy focus on transportation and municipal projects.  We provide our clients with a wide range of services including natural resource assessments and permitting, NEPA compliance and document preparation, Phase I contamination assessments, permit compliance oversight during construction, ecosystem restoration design and construction, environmental planning and design services, and sea level rise analyses.  

Your Opportunity

We are seeking a multi-skilled Environmental Scientist with experience in the environmental consulting industry in our Coral Gables, Florida office. We provide our clients with a wide range of services including natural resource assessments and permitting, NEPA compliance and document preparation, gopher tortoise relocation, permit compliance oversight during construction, ecosystem restoration design and construction, and environmental planning and design services. 

The qualified candidate will lead the environmental permitting program for our office, which is heavily focused on transportation-related project. This candidate will be expected to develop and maintain successful working relationships with clients and regulatory agency representatives, lead the preparation and facilitation of permit applications, and mentor junior staff on the development of documentation required to support the permit applications. The ideal candidate will have experience producing high-quality technical reports and report figures from the analysis of field and GIS-based data, planning and leading natural resource surveys, and interfacing with regulators and clients. We are looking for a highly motivated and organized individual, capable of working independently and handling the demands of multiple priorities for various clients and projects. This candidate will possess excellent communication and personal skills and is expected to work effectively within a project team.

Your Key Responsibilities

Responsibilities include preparation of permit applications, biological impact assessments, and NEPA documents for a variety of projects for the Florida Department of Transportation and other Federal, State and local agency clients. The candidate will be required to work primarily in an office setting with the ability to plan and lead the natural resource field work efforts necessary to support the deliverable. Preferred candidates will bring established relationships with various regulators and experience with a variety of South Florida natural resources. Candidates with focused experience in one specific natural resource area will also be considered.

Responsibilities will also include:

Identification of potential environmental impacts through reviews of engineering plans, aerials, and GIS databases. Technical report writing. Preparing permit application packages. Planning and leading benthic/marine resource surveys and preparing benthic/marine resource survey reports. Conducting wildlife surveys and preparing wildlife survey reports. Delineating wetlands, conducting functional assessments, and preparing corresponding documentation. GIS analysis and exhibit creation. Effective communication with colleagues, clients, and agency personnel.

Your Capabilities and Experience

Highly effective verbal and written communication skills and extremely proficient in technical writing.  Must be disciplined and motivated in producing high-quality deliverables. Must be able to effectively interact directly with clients and local regulatory agencies in a professional manner. A valid driver’s license, good driving record and ability to drive corporate vehicles including a full-size pickup truck safely. Ability to work in harsh and demanding field environments.  May require working long field days outdoors, sometimes under rigorous conditions (e.g., hot and/or rainy weather, remote areas, under water, in a wide variety of habitats). Knowledge of local, state, and federal permitting regulations is required. Experience with environmental permitting and established relationships with permitting regulators, required. Experience delineating wetlands, preparing wetland data forms and functional assessments is desirable. Experience operating and navigating boats in tidal waters is desirable. Experience conducting benthic surveys, habitat assessments, and surveys for threatened and endangered species in South Florida is desirable. ArcGIS experience is desirable.


Education and Credentials

Candidates must have at Bachelor’s Degree in biological/environmental sciences 4+ years related professional experience. Scuba certification by a recognized agency and scientific diving experience to collect scientific data is highly desired.

 

Typical office environment working with computers and remaining sedentary for long periods of time. Field work may include exposure to the elements including inclement weather. Ability to lift and move items and heavy equipment.
