**POSITION PURPOSE**
The Environmental Specialist is responsible for assisting our environmental team in maintaining regulatory compliance in federal, state, and local environmental and natural resource laws and regulations applicable to utility construction site permits and approvals. This position will also actively support our environmental management system's practices and procedures as well as Company policies, procedures, management practices, and other natural resource projects.
**DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES**
+ Performs regulatory screening and manages permits for construction projects for the gas and electric utility.
+ Inspects construction sites, operations sites, and other key facilities for environmental compliance.
+ Develops positive working relationships with internal operations stakeholders, consultants, contractors, and regulators.
+ Researches and analyzes environmental regulations to determine potential impact on Company operations.
+ Helps the Company maintain environmental management system and regulatory compliance through monitoring, reporting, and recordkeeping tasks associated with regulations, policies, and procedures, especially those associated with erosion control, wetland, archeological, threatened and endangered species, and other natural resource permits/approvals.
+ Participates in the Company's growing area of renewable energy and natural resource management, including researching and becoming familiar with conservation and species protection practices.
+ Participates in emergency response, especially emergencies related to permitting and environmental compliance.
+ Participates in and represents the Company in cross-company environmental groups, external meetings, and conferences.
**QUALIFICATIONS**
**Education and Experience**
+ Bachelor's degree in environmental science, biology, conservation, chemistry, geology, environmental engineering, or related field, or equivalent.
+ At least one to two years of experience in environmental and natural resource project work preferred.
+ Knowledge and experience with environmental and natural resource construction permits and approvals in electric or gas utilities preferred.
**Knowledge and Skills**
+ Working knowledge of environmental compliance strategies and methods; environmental reporting and testing systems; and pertinent regulations.
+ Working knowledge of conservation and natural resource management concepts and practices; working knowledge of wetlands, habitat, and endangered resources management and protection.
+ Working ability to research, analyze, and evaluate new program techniques, methods, and procedures; apply the laws and regulations to maintain environmental compliance; conduct a variety of surveys; effectively oversee, evaluate, and recommend appropriate corrective action.
+ Able to communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing. Able to prepare clear and concise reports; develop and present training and public information sessions.
+ Able to understand the Company's core processes and seek ways to cost-effectively integrate environmentally protective measures into those processes.
+ Able to establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work. Comfortable working with internal and external stakeholders.
+ Able to work in a team and take direction from senior employees.
+ Able to manage multiple priorities and meet deadlines associated with those priorities.
+ Familiar with various software programs including word processing, spreadsheet, and database packages.

**JOB LOCATION**
The position is hybrid, and office days are in downtown Madison, Wisconsin, where MGE is an active participant in community efforts to preserve the area's extraordinary quality of life. We offer free, on-site parking and are located near biking trails and bus stops. Many employees enjoy the use of our many on-site EV charging stations.
This job will require up to 25% travel, which includes local, in-state, and in neighboring states to perform site inspections, and travel for training with some need to stay overnight.
