POSITION DESCRIPTION

 

Title:    Heavy Equipment Mechanic

POSITION SUMMARY

This position is accountable for providing maintenance support to field operations at project locations for Scott Bridge Company, Inc.  Incumbents are responsible for inspection, repair and maintenance of functional parts of mechanical equipment or machinery used in construction work.  Typically, they will work closely with the Superintendent, Foreman, Mechanics, Welders, Laborers, Helpers and other skilled or semi-skilled craft workers.

 

SPECIFIC RESPONSIBLITIES

Works as assigned by the Yard Foreman to ensure that timely maintenance and repair of mechanical equipment and machinery. Disassembles repairs and assembles diesel and gasoline engines. Performs minor and major overhauls and repairs on brake, electrical, fuel, lubrication, cooling, vacuum and hydraulic systems and drive trains. Troubleshoots and repairs mechanical, hydraulic and electrical problems with machinery and equipment. Installs batteries, tires, wiring, windows and windshields. Lubricants and services automotive and heavy equipment as needed. Maintains appropriate maintenance records of all repairs and plans next regularly scheduled maintenance date. Orders materials and supplies needed for repair and maintenance of various pieces of equipment and machinery. Maintains a library of various maintenance and repair reference manuals. Performs general facility maintenance and clean-up tasks. Performs related mechanic duties as assigned. Participated in Safety and Environmental initiatives that will contribute to compliance of State/Federal regulations and improve existing Company programs.

POSITION REQUIREMENTS

A minimum of two (2) years experience as an automobile or heavy equipment mechanic or any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the necessary mechanic skills, knowledge and abilities is required.  The incumbent must also be able to communicate well and have good knowledge of the:

Practices and materials of the heavy equipment mechanic trade. Operation of various types of marine equipment, machinery and devices. Importance of safe work practices in a marine environment. Mechanic craft and be capable of demonstrating proficiency to perform the job.

 

PHYISCAL/MENTAL REQUIREMENTS

The incumbent must be able to perform the essential functions of the job with or without reasonable workplace accommodation.

The individual must also be able to wear and properly utilize appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) to work or visit within areas where it is required.  This includes hard hat, safety glasses, respirators, ear plugs, steel toed shoes, personal flotation devices, or other protective equipment as required by the work performed and location the work is being done.

In addition, Heavy Equipment Mechanic must be capable of:

Standing, stooping, kneeling, squatting, climbing or sitting for long periods of time. Repetitive movements by feet, shoulders, arms, writs, hands and back in performance work. Climbing vertical ladders to heights of 40’-50’ Working in confined spaces Working at elevated heights Lifting 100 lb. objects as required Carrying 75 lb. objects as required Adapting to extreme temperature changes Adapting to outdoor conditions and prolonged exposure Remaining calm during emergencies and respond appropriately as directed by the circumstances of the incident.
