Equipment Operator

Job purpose

The position is responsible for the operation and maintenance of heavy machinery and equipment or street repairs.

CDL license is required for this role.

Duties and responsibilities

Drive truck with crew to work sites; lead the operation of heavy machinery and equipment to dig or back-fill trenches, tear down buildings, lift or move heavy loads, assist with pipeline installation or repair, clean out drainage ditches, sweep streets, compact dirt, repairs of roadways; calculates quantity of asphalt required for daily schedule of repair jobs or other specialized tasks; ensures compliance with safety regulations by crew members.Operate large trucks to deliver or remove equipment or materials from job sites, or haul dirt or other materials.Perform maintenance and repairs on heavy equipment such as lubricating, adjusting tracks on excavator or bulldozer, replacing light bulbs, hydraulic hoses or relief valves, adjusting fan blades, flushing radiators, or replacing fuses.Operate pneumatic tools such as jackhammers or saws to complete such tasks as breaking up concrete or blacktop or cutting pipe or trees.Perform grading in the construction and/or resurfacing of roads; utilize levels to check grades and ensure compliance with specifications.Lead and assist with miscellaneous projects as directed, such as masonry work, line location, patching roads, digging graves, clearing debris, constructing building pads, maintaining right-of-ways, or building and maintaining drains and boxes.Secure and partition off work areas with traffic signs, cones, and/or barricades; flags and directs traffic around work areas as necessary.Perform clerical tasks such as completing work orders, and routine reports for the area of responsibility in compliance with departmental rules and regulations.Attend safety classes, reinforce and comply with company safety policies.Work harmoniously with ESG employees and the public and comply with all ESG policies.

Qualifications

Prefer five years of related experience. Must have a high school diploma, GED, or specialized vocational training. Must have a valid state Class A Commercial Driver’s License and meet minimum driving standards.

Knowledge of:

Basic math to include addition and subtraction.Responsibility for the actions of others in the general public

Skill in:

Leading or handling machines, tools, equipment or work aids involving moderate latitude in selecting appropriate items.

Ability to:

Read simple sentences or instructions; write simple sentences; speak simple sentences using basic grammar.Perform semi-routine work following procedures with occasional problem-solving required; requires normal attention for accurate results.

Working conditions

While performing the duties of this job, the employee may be exposed to extreme heat and/or cold, wet or humid conditions, bright and/or dim light, dust or pollen, intense noise levels, vibration, fumes or noxious odors. All required safety standards shall be adhered to in order to mitigate risk from moving mechanical parts, electrical shock, heights, blood-borne pathogens, traffic, animals and wildlife, toxic or caustic chemicals, and other identified hazards.

Physical requirements

This position requires frequent standing, kneeling, bending and climbing. The employee must be able to use hands to operate and manipulate tools and equipment. This position requires very heavy physical exertion including the ability to lift over 50 pounds and exert over 100 pounds of force on a regular basis.

The employee must be willing to work non-standard and overtime hours as required.

The position requires normal visual acuity and field of vision, hearing, and depth perception.
