Our expertise spans atmospheric, freshwater, marine, terrestrial, and human systems, as well as the processes that link ecosystems to human populations. Building on our research expertise and partnerships, we provide high quality education for environmental scientists and science-driven managers, giving students the skills and training opportunities they need to excel in professional environmental careers. Position Summary Our research team at Portland State University is looking for a creative and highly motivated postdoc for a NOAA-funded 2.5-year marine debris research project titled Beyond TAPPS. The study will work with the coastal tourism industry to address that sector’s contributions to aerial and marine microplastic pollution by testing three microplastics interception interventions, conducting interviews to understand challenges and benefits to industry personnel of implementing interception technologies, and creating education and outreach components for coastal visitors.
The postdoc will coordinate several project components including: working with the Innovations Lab to design a new type of filter, coordinating with hotels around filter installation and sample collection, signage development, interview scheduling, sample processing, and data analysis and writing. The work will include traveling to and from established coastal towns as well as participating in virtual meetings to organize and communicate with partners. The researcher will contribute to our current understanding of microplastics pollution from washing machines, dryers, and dishwashers in industrial settings.
The postdoc will be housed in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences at Portland State University and will be advised by Dr. Elise Granek. Our interdisciplinary team consists of Drs. Elise Granek (lead PI; Environmental Science and Management), Susanne Brander (co-PI, Oregon State University, Hatfield Marine Science Center), Tala Navab (co-PI; OSU Environmental Eng), Jackie Padilla Gamiño (co-PI; University of Washington, Ecophysiologist), Angee Doerr (co-PI; OSU and OR Sea Grant Extension), one PhD student and one MS student, a postdoc with expertise in microplastics removal interventions and/or microplastics sample processing in multiple environmental media (this position). We are partnering with hotels, municipalities and their wastewater utilities, policy makers, and other professionals throughout the Pacific Northwest. The project will also engage the Hatfield Marine Science Center Visitor’s Center to develop an educational exhibit. Primary Activity R - Research Minimum Qualifications PhD in Ecotoxicology, Environmental Science, Ecology, Environmental Engineering or closely related fields. Expertise in microplastics sampling and sample processing with publications as lead author. Demonstrated project coordination experience Proven track record of independent research, critical thinking, and problem-solving. Ability to work independently and in a team. Excellent oral and written communication skills. Excellent organizational and time management skills. A commitment to promoting and enhancing diversity. Total Compensation Range & Benefits Statement Salary is dependent on several factors, and new employees will typically start around the Q1 level to allow for later growth within the salary band. PSU has a structured process for determining starting compensation, taking into account years of related experience, applicable skills, knowledge and abilities, market parity, and internal equity.
The starting annual salary for this position will be $61,008 but may be negotiated above this rate dependent upon the factors above, the budget of the hiring department, and approval from HR.
