Estimator - Electrical/Telecom Dry Utility

 

The Junior Estimator presents estimates to the leadership team, demonstrating competency in all components of each estimate and includes back-up supporting documentation to defend the estimate and the information used to assemble it. Additionally, the Junior Estimator will monitor ongoing Owner and Developer budgets within the industry sector to track upcoming business development and project bid opportunities.

Key Responsibilities/Accountabilities:

Prepares work to be estimated by gathering proposals, drawings, specifications, and related documents Identifies labor, material, and time requirements by studying proposals, drawings, specifications, and related documents Performs, or reviews and confirms, estimating and quantity takeoffs Reviews and confirms quotations from vendors and subcontractors Interface and coordinate with subcontractors and vendors to develop project estimates and proposals Analyzes regional labor rates, per diems, and any other relevant market conditions to be used in the estimate Consults with clients, vendors, personnel in other departments to discuss and formulate estimates and resolve issues Confers with engineers, vendors and subcontractors to develop Value Engineering ideas to drive project design and economics Travels to local and regional project sites to understand construction sequence, means and methods, site conditions and perform time-studies Maintains technical knowledge by attending educational workshops and reviewing technical publications Assists in miscellaneous functions and tasks to facilitate a growing business group Provides support and assistance to division management in creating new proposals

Qualifications and Experience:

Bachelor’s degree in Construction Management, Engineering, Business or related field is preferred; equivalent work experience is acceptable. Minimum of 5 years’ experience in estimating, or equivalent role; Direct experience with estimating construction projects, preferably focused on piping, underground utility work, with knowledge of excavation and civil-related construction is preferred. Experience in commercial; heavy commercial/industrial; university, aviation, hospital, or other campus related projects and industries is an asset. Related experience in project execution and operations, such as project engineering and field engineering, is a plus

Skills:

Detailed knowledge of estimating fundamentals Knowledge of typical costs associated with piping and civil activities General understanding of Fixed Price, Time & Materials, and Unit contract pricing mechanisms Aptitude for mathematics; ability to analyze, compare and interpret detailed, but sometimes poorly defined information, and be able to make sound and accurate judgments based on this information Ability to focus on details, while analyzing and managing larger obstacles Assertiveness and self-assurance in presenting and supporting conclusions, strong communications and interpersonal skills Proficiency in project management and the ability to incorporate work-breakdown structure (WBS) techniques in cost estimating complex development projects Familiarity with scheduling software (i.e., MS Project) Ability to work under pressure and stress to meet bid deadlines Strong attention to detail and accuracy to provide accurate estimates to avoid bid/proposal losses or a project money loss on a job Working knowledge of personal computers and software applications with MS Office application proficiency; experience with estimating software Excellent organizational, planning, and time management skills with ability to coordinate and prioritize multiple tasks concurrently Demonstrated skills in written and verbal communications; ability to compose basic as well as complex technical documents and formal letters; ability to effectively verbally communicate and provide presentations with all team members, partners, and stakeholders Driven and self-motivated problem solver with ability to take proactive initiative to help expand the division’s footprint.
