Primary Purpose of the Organizational Unit The complexity of social, economic, and structural factors that have created such lasting social problems as substandard housing, segregation, and homelessness and the need for sustainable community development demand a multidisciplinary, multi-method, community-engaged approach. Center for Housing and Community Studies (CHCS) brings together faculty, staff, and students from multiple disciplines to address these problems as well as to provide a point of contact for community partners, an opportunity for the practical education and training of UNCG students, and community-based evaluation and sustainable long-term regional planning. Position Summary The Eviction Mediation Program Mediator will expand the services of the Eviction Mediation Program with the Eviction Mediation Program Manager to develop relationships throughout the community. The position will also provide mediation services as needed inside and outside of the courthouse. The Mediator will use the cloud-based case management system to record all such mediation activities.
The Mediator will develop relationships throughout the community and identify landlords, for one-on-one communications, with a view to informing landlords of Mediation Project services and assessing the level of interest. The Mediator will conduct mediations at the small claims court in both the High Point and Greensboro Courthouses to assist landlords and tenants involved in summary ejectment cases. This position will also provide resource information as part of their mediation duties.
Minimum Qualifications Master’s plus at least 2 years experience in the fields of housing policy, social work, mediation, conflict resolution, or related fields. Knowledge of the law, in particular housing laws, would be preferred. Ability to communicate professionally and directly with senior officials, elected officials, and executive directors. In-depth knowledge of conflict resolution and mediation. Knowledge of housing-related matters, including rental contracts, lease agreements, and local housing resources. Experience in working with a diverse group of people under difficult circumstances. Additional Required Certifications, Licensures, and Certificates Preferred Qualifications MPA preferred Experience in communicating and disseminating findings to a broad and diverse audience through written and oral presentations to diverse public constituencies. The mediator will maintain and obtain knowledge of housing counseling agencies and resources that would be helpful in addressing rental areas and addressing cost burdens. As part of mediation services, this position will connect parties with community resources. This position will be responsible for reducing the tensions between disputing parties as part of the mediation process so a mutually agreed-upon resolution is reached. Percentage Of Time 25% Key Responsibility Recruitment and Training Essential Tasks The mediator will work with the Eviction Mediation Program Coordinator in the training of volunteer lawyers, law and graduate students, and citizen volunteer mediators.
