General Notes

The Cockrell School of Engineering at the University of Texas at Austin is looking for an experienced executive to lead business and strategic planning, development, and industry engagements related to priority research areas. We are looking for a well-regarded, exceptional industry professional with relevant leadership experience in highly technical and innovation-driven industries. Competitive candidates are expected to have direct experience defining technology and business strategy, constructing and managing facilities, and overseeing funded programs from a diverse customer base, including the private and public sectors. The ideal candidate will be an excellent leader and will work with key stakeholders including University leadership and external partners.

Responsibilities

Drive business and technology development strategy to create internationally recognized and high impact programs in critical public and private sectors.

Lead and support the management of high performing, differentiated, teams of business and engagement administrators, researchers, and innovators. Lead the development of a talent acquisition strategy for attracting and retaining top researchers and industry professionals to advance the business and strategic priorities of the Cockrell School and the University.

Develop and maintain a business plan for high profile, public-private programs and investments.

Establish and manage strategic partnerships in key areas of the innovation ecosystem, related to engineering, semiconductors, energy and defense sectors.

Develop plans to work with startups and mid-sized companies, and to establish technology transfer to US-based companies in priority areas.

Required Qualifications

Proven experience in executive leadership

Degrees in science or engineering, including a Ph.D. in a science, engineering, or adjacent field.

In depth knowledge of business and financial aspects of a capital-intensive operation

Strong leadership and organizational skills

Excellent communication and people skills

Proven experience developing and stewarding internal and external stakeholder relationships

Relevant education and experience may be substituted as appropriate.

Preferred Qualifications

Experience working in a technology company preferably semiconductors, energy or defense sectors

Experience working with international businesses

Worked in a startup environment

Experience working with federal, state or local government organizations.

Working Conditions

Work is performed in a standard office environment.

Repetitive use of keyboard at workstation.

Work outside of standard business hours, including evenings and weekends, may be required.

Work Shift

 Standard work schedule is Monday – Friday, 8:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m.

Retirement Plan Eligibility:

The retirement plan for this position is Teacher Retirement System of Texas (TRS), subject to the position being at least 20 hours per week and at least 135 days in length. This position has the option to elect the Optional Retirement Program (ORP) instead of TRS, subject to the position being 40 hours per week and at least 135 days in length.
