The Connecticut State Council of the Service Employees International Union is comprised of 5 local unions -New
England Healthcare Workers 1199, 32BJ- Connecticut, CSEA Local 2001, the 4Cs Local 1973, and CEUI Local 511-
representing and fighting for over 60,000 active and retired public sector, publicly funded and building service
employees, dedicated to building a more equitable and progressive Connecticut.


The State Council is currently seeking an Executive Director who has a proven track-record as a progressive leader
to coordinate and support the political and other activities of the five locals. 


POSITION OVERVIEW
The Executive Director is appointed by the Executive Board and shall serve at the direction of the Executive Board
and be an advisor to the executive board. All actions taken by the executive director or designee on behalf of the
union shall be subject to review by the executive board. The executive director shall assign and supervise staff
employees of the state council. The Executive Director also shall represent the union in various coalitions to promote
the interests of the members. Currently the work is in hybrid mode - both remotely and in person, but as we
(hopefully) transition out of the pandemic, it will shift to solely i- person interactions.


ROLES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
● Develop and implement comprehensive political and electoral action program to support the needs of the
locals and members
● Serve as a voice for members at the Connecticut General Assembly fighting for services, fair taxes, and
rights on the job
● Develop and enhance the work of coalitions that share a common goal of fighting income and racial
inequality
● Work in partnership with the President and the Executive Board
● Coordinate, direct, and evaluate the work of staff employees
● Assign staff resources to programs and projects as deemed necessary
● Interact with International Union staff
● Assist the Executive Board in understanding its policy development responsibilities
● Overseeing finances of the state council
● Maintain good working relationships with elected officials, and other unions and community groups
● Conduct regular meetings with the Executive Board
● Implement the policies established by the Executive Board and the membership on a day to day basis
● Participate in the development and delivery of education and training for the staff, leadership, and activists
● Oversee compliance with legal and regulatory requirements

EXPERIENCE
● A record of successful leadership experience in positions of increasing responsibility including management
at a senior level for at least three years
● Background in public policy and labor advocacy,
● Ability to oversee and execute political and legislative relations, activities and campaigns that impacts our
members and our union, including interacting with the elected and administrative officials
● Experience with internal and external organization with labor unions
● Strong oral and written communication skills
● Ability to work long, irregular hours and weekends
● Ability to travel as needed
● Ability to exercise excellent judgment while working under pressure
● Experience reporting to and advising an elected executive board
● A record of life-long learning, including recent professional development work
