Executive Director of Medical Oncology Services - Full Time
The Executive Director of Oncology provides strategic and operational leadership for the oncology service line, including medical oncology, radiation oncology, and outpatient infusion services. This role ensures high-quality patient care, regulatory compliance, financial stewardship, and service line growth in alignment with organizational goals. The Director collaborates with physicians, clinical staff, and administrative leaders to enhance patient outcomes, improve operational efficiency, and drive program development. Essential Responsibilities: Strategic Leadership: • Develop and implement strategic plans to enhance oncology services, improve patient access, and expand program offerings. • Collaborate with hospital leadership, physicians, and community stakeholders to strengthen partnerships and promote oncology care initiatives. • Monitor industry trends, regulatory changes, and technological advancements to ensure service line innovation and competitiveness. Operational Management: • Oversee daily operations of medical oncology, radiation oncology, and outpatient infusion, ensuring seamless integration of services. • Develop policies, procedures, and protocols to optimize patient care, safety, and workflow efficiency. • Ensure compliance with all federal, state, and accreditation standards (e.g., CMS, Joint Commission, ONS, ASTRO). • Foster a culture of continuous improvement by utilizing data-driven decision-making and Lean methodologies. Financial Oversight: • Develop and manage budgets, including revenue forecasting, expense control, and financial performance monitoring. • Identify opportunities for cost reduction and revenue growth while maintaining high-quality care. • Work with payers and contracting teams to optimize reimbursement for oncology services. Clinical Program Development & Quality Improvement: • Lead efforts to enhance oncology patient care pathways, survivorship programs, and multidisciplinary team collaboration. • Oversee quality improvement initiatives, patient safety programs, and accreditation processes (e.g., CoC, NAPBC). • Implement evidence-based practices and ensure adherence to national oncology guidelines (e.g., NCCN, ASCO). Staff Leadership & Development: • Recruit, mentor, and develop oncology department leaders, clinical staff, and support personnel. • Foster a positive work environment that promotes professional growth, teamwork, and staff engagement. • Ensure appropriate staffing levels and competency training to meet patient care demands. Required Skills Skills & Competencies: • Proven ability to develop and execute strategic initiatives. • Strong financial management and budgeting skills. • Excellent leadership, communication, and team-building abilities. • Knowledge of value-based care models and population health in oncology. • Experience with electronic medical records (EMR), oncology-specific systems, and data analytics. Working Conditions: • Primarily a clinic/administrative setting with occasional travel to affiliated sites or conferences. • May require evening or weekend availability for operational needs. Required Experience Qualifications: Education & Experience: • Required: Bachelor’s degree in healthcare administration, nursing, business, or a related field. • Preferred: Master’s degree in Healthcare Administration (MHA), Business Administration (MBA), or a related field. • Minimum 5-7 years of progressive leadership experience in oncology or a related healthcare setting. • Strong knowledge of oncology service line operations, clinical workflows, and regulatory requirements. Certifications: • Preferred: Oncology Nursing Certification (e.g., OCN, AOCN) or Fellow of the American College of Healthcare Executives (FACHE).
