Executive Medical Director, Obesity & Metabolism - Medical Affairs
The Executive Director, Medical Affairs for Obesity and Metabolism will report to the Head of Internal Medicine for Global Medical Affairs with primary responsibility to lead and ensure successful execution of all relevant medical affairs programs and functions associated with obesity and metabolism assets in clinical development. In addition to leading the strategy and executional elements of phase IV (post-marketing) and investigator-initiated studies, the role includes being a thought partner with our clinical development colleagues for the purpose of driving innovative development strategies, as well as being a collaborator with commercial colleagues, helping to ensure commercial strategies benefit from the medical insight of an experienced team of clinicians. Lastly, the role will include oversight of many programs instrumental to the successful medical introduction of new obesity and metabolism products, and the important medical support of these programs during their commercialization. This senior role provides day to day people leadership to a growing team responsible for the planning and execution of medical affairs studies, programs and projects supporting development activities and commercialization needs for assigned products and assets. This individual will be a key representative of Medical Affairs to a range of audiences, including executive leadership, development partners if applicable, and will be a member of the Global Development Strategic Project Teams of the assigned assets. **_A typical day as the Executive Director Medical Affairs, Obesity and Metabolism might look like:_** + Provide deep therapeutic area subject matter expertise to an expanding and advancing portfolio that will cover several molecules and therapeutic platforms. + Collaborate and provide sound therapeutic area subject matter expertise to key stakeholders across Regeneron (and alliance partners as needed) including internal scientific colleagues, the Strategic Program Teams, as well as colleagues responsible for commercial strategies. + Ensure that scientific rigor and innovation continues to be integrated into all medical affairs-related development and commercialization strategies. Maintain excellent scientific standing among peers and the ability to address issues with a very high level of scientific rigor and creative solutions. + Develop a world-class obesity and metabolism medical affairs team; ensuring that our medical team is being challenged and developed to be ready to take on new roles and programs as the pipeline evolves. + Responsible for the timely planning and execution of medical affairs strategies addressing the development and/or commercialization needs for pipeline products. + Accountable for the compliant, timely and efficient planning and execution of medical affairs programs/projects that support development and commercialization needs. + Ensures optimal professional relationships with external stakeholders i.e., Health Care Professionals (HCPs), experts who serve as external resource and advisers to Regeneron. + Plans to adequately resource the team as the portfolio grows and matures. + Keeps major stakeholders (Head of Internal Medicine Clinical Development, Regeneron Obesity Center Strategy and Business Operations leader, Global Program Heads, commercial leadership) and other members of senior management updated on important medical affairs developments and outcomes. + Guides the medical affairs team to think broadly as it creates innovative medical affairs strategic options. + Ensures that the best practices and learnings from the wide variety of general medicine programs are shared across the team to minimize “reinventing the wheel” and to promote a vibrant collaborative environment. + Standing or ad-hoc membership for various cross-functional and cross-alliance teams; providing medical perspectives to the global and US strategic and medical organizations. + Development and cultivation of long-term strategic partnerships with clinical experts, societies, collaborative groups, advocacy groups, and other external stakeholders representing Regeneron. + Staying abreast of current developments within pertinent medical and scientific therapeutic area through familiarity with current literature, attendance at medical society meetings, involvement with professional associations, and other avenues. + Serves as principal spokesperson for the medical affairs function on highly significant matters pertaining to obesity and metabolism. **_This role might be for you if:_** + Board-certified endocrinologist with a strong preference for an expert with additional training in metabolism and obesity. + At least 10 years of pharmaceutical experience, in either a clinical development role or in a medical affairs role directly involved in obesity and metabolism programs. A preference will be for individuals with substantial medical affairs experience supporting global drug launches. + Experience leading teams with demonstration of successful collaborative efforts across various groups, including commercial and clinical development. + Makes connections among previously unrelated scientific ideas + Makes good decisions based on a mixture of data analysis, wisdom, experience, and judgment + Deals with scientific concepts and complexity comfortably + Uses rigorous logic and methods to solve difficult problems with effective solutions + Comes up with new and unique solutions that advance the science and the obesity and metabolism portfolio. + Ability to identify the most critical data points to appropriately drive innovative and effective solutions. + Knowledgeable in current and potential future trends, technology, policies, practices, and information of the competitive landscape of obesity drug development and global health authority requirements for obesity drug approval and successful commercialization. + Excels at bringing the creative ideas of others forward and knows how to manage and cultivate the creative process of others; encourages diverse ideas and open conversations. + Is aware of and provides challenging stretch assignments that are aligned with each team member’s career aspirations; hold frequent feedback and development discussions. + Accurately scopes out work for the team given the company’s priorities and needs. + Sets and communicates goals to the team; identifies clear key milestones that are measurable and assessed frequently. + Anticipates and adjusts as the business evolves; creates effective contingency plans. + Accurately scopes out length and difficulty of tasks and projects.
