2025-03-12 11:59 PMCBC Calgary is looking for a seasoned journalist to lead our newsroom as the Executive Producer of News, overseeing a group of dynamic, creative journalists who file to audio, video and text platforms. CBC Calgary’s focus is on original journalism, finding the angles that matter to our audience and telling stories that are rooted in our southern Alberta communities.
This is a key leadership role in Calgary’s largest newsroom
As Executive Producer of News, you will set the news agenda for the day and work with the leadership team on long-term original stories, investigative work and special projects, such as election planning. You will manage the recruitment and development of staff. You will guide and support on-air talent.
You’re a nimble and visionary journalist, capable of managing people as well as complex journalistic and legal situations. You believe in fairness and balance and approaching stories with an empty notebook. Your leadership style inspires others to experiment and do their best work. You understand the unique social and cultural communities of Calgary and Southern Alberta. You are a strategic thinker who puts audience needs at the centre of your decision-making. You are naturally collaborative. Your ability to build relationships helps ensure the success of your teams and the station alike. You will develop the next wave of journalists,
Tasks:
Responsible for overseeing the daily and long-term news agenda for CBC Calgary, including bureaus in Lethbridge, Medicine Hat and the Bow Valley
Oversee the journalism involved in all news content.
Identify and develop emerging talent within and outside of CBC News.
Provide regular feedback to employees
Make daily staffing and scheduling decisions in collaboration with our scheduling department
Able to shepherd our news content into a video and streaming future.
We are looking for a candidate with the following:
A university degree or equivalent.
Ten years’ editorial experience of which three must involve leading program teams in a major market.
Proven experience working with and developing hosts, producers and other journalists.
A strong team leader with the ability to inspire others.
Can interpret and adapt to audience trends and data.
An ability to choose relevant, audience focused stories, which reflect issues being discussed
Quick to react and respond to breaking stories.
Demonstrated skills in the area of conflict resolution, mentoring, talent recognition and development.
A commitment to reflecting community and diversity.
