The Hartford's Complex Liability Solutions team is a dedicated group of underwriters, risk engineering consultants and liability claims specialists experienced in hard-to-place products and premises risks. We specialize in GL and supported Excess placements for severity-driven risks.  

This is a great opportunity for Middle Market, Loss Sensitive Casualty, or Excess Casualty Underwriters looking to expand their knowledge or specialize in high hazard liability risks. Our team underwrites complex risks most retail carriers would decline!

Responsibilities include providing technical underwriting expertise in the risk selection, pricing, administration, and account management of the Complex Liability Solutions book of business, profitably underwrite new and renewal high hazard driven business that requires strong exposure and control evaluation skills, identify appropriate opportunities consistent with risk appetite, and develop strong agency relationships.

Additional responsibilities include:

Create, drive and execute on strategies for new and renewal accounts 

Adeptly manage an approximately $10M+ renewal book  

Take the lead in communicating strategy to the agency; coordinate communications across the Enterprise; educate other Hartford business units on strategy and appetite

Act as a trusted advisor to agents/brokers

Establish/maintain/update pipeline of target accounts 90-120 ahead of effective dates  

Ensure adequate external visibility by adhering to in-person broker/agent sales call quota within assigned territory

Ability to manage a high volume of submission flow, quickly review opportunities, then determine next steps

Meet or exceed operational efficiency standards for generating submission flow and quoting allotted number of NB accounts per month

Establish fluency across all underwriting systems  

Manages cross-sell and up-sell opportunities across the team

Manages the sales process including planning, operating routines, and monitoring working opportunities

Coach and mentor others on sales practices and underwriting routines

Is well versed about every aspect of The Hartford's Value proposition to best position us for success

Is professionally demanding and holds internal and external customers accountable


 

Qualifications:
• 5+ years of Middle Market, National Accounts Casualty or Excess Casualty underwriting required

• Knowledge of and proficiency in loss rating/pricing accounts with large retentions

• Understanding of loss pick development, policy terms analysis, and pricing rationale for both GL and Excess lines

• Excellent communication, interpersonal and presentation skills
• An ability to think analytically about business problems, make recommendations and propose solutions

• Demonstrated success in developing and maintaining solid relationships with all internal and external business partners
• High energy self-starter, who is resilient and has an entrepreneurial spirit
• Demonstration of solid time, organizational, and desk management skills
• Goal-oriented and delivers outcomes
• Ability to challenge the status quo and compete to win
• Superior technical knowledge and sound decision-making and analytical skills

• Position title and tier will be determined upon careful review of selected candidate's qualifications

•This role will have a Hybrid work arrangement, with the expectation of working out of the Frisco or Houston office 3 days a week (Tuesday through Thursday); open to a experienced remote candidate in Louisiana, who can commit to traveling into TX territory monthly. 

Compensation

The listed annualized base pay range is primarily based on analysis of similar positions in the external market. Actual base pay could vary and may be above or below the listed range based on factors including but not limited to performance, proficiency and demonstration of competencies required for the role. The base pay is just one component of The Hartford’s total compensation package for employees. Other rewards may include short-term or annual bonuses, long-term incentives, and on-the-spot recognition. The annualized base pay range for this role is:

$78,000 - $184,800

The posted salary range reflects our ability to hire at different position titles and levels depending on background and experience.
