Responsibilities

The Exercise Specialist collaborates with medical and allied health staff in activities that support the Pulmonary Division’s mission and goals. They will also perform their job responsibilities in a manner that is consistent with the vision, philosophy and core values of Mayo Clinic. Responsibilities include screening, assessing, evaluating, and interpreting measurements to provide appropriate therapeutic intervention, education, counseling and disease management for patients in the pulmonary rehabilitation, and pulmonary diagnostic setting. Coordination of quality monitoring and improvement. Assessment and development of new programs. Provides analysis of the work process to improve outcomes and services. Demonstrates understanding of regulatory standards and reporting requirements. Participates in orienting new employees, authorized interns and visiting staff. Presents educational sessions to patients regarding health and disease management. Supervises exercise sessions, monitors oxygen saturation, heart rate, blood pressure, rating of perceived exertion during exercise. Monitors pre and post exercise blood glucose if appropriate. Delivers and titrates oxygen to patients in accordance with departmental policy and/or physician orders. Maintains a safe work environment. Plans and implements an exercise prescription based on individual patient needs. Functions as part of an interdisciplinary team in delivering an individualized treatment plan. Maintains a safe exercise environment. Performs various diagnostic/evaluative tests, including Cardio-pulmonary exercise testing EVO2. Functions as an integral part of an emergency response team within the assigned work area. Represents the exercise science profession in departmental research projects. The individual must demonstrate knowledge of the principles of growth and development of the life span. The ability to assess data reflective of the patient status and appropriately interpret information relative to the patient’s age-specific needs is required. Develops and implements treatment plans for patients, including disease management education, counseling and support to patients and families involved, exercise prescription, proper exercise training and technique, and safe use of exercise equipment. Monitors and evaluates each patient's treatment plan and must work collaboratively and effectively with the medical team regarding each patient's care.



Qualifications

Bachelor's degree in exercise science, exercise physiology, recreational therapy, health education, cardiac rehabilitation, health fitness or other equivalent allied health field from an accredited college/university is required. Master’s degree in related field is preferred. Previous training and/or experience in supervised cardiac rehabilitation, cardiopulmonary stress testing, cardiovascular and pulmonary physiology, cardiovascular pathology, cardiac medications, exercise prescription is preferred (i.e. experience from a formal internship is highly desired). Basic knowledge of rest and exercise 12-lead electrocardiogram and rhythm abnormalities is required. Must be physically able to demonstrate/lead various exercises and assist patients with various exercises, as well as with the use of various exercise equipment. Basic Life Support Certification is required upon hire and must be valid for 90 days or greater from start date. Maintains Basic Life Support (BLS) Competency. Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) preferred. An ACSM Clinical Exercise Physiology certification preferred
