Position Overview: The successful candidate will manage and coordinate the expatriate tax services for the company's global workforce. This includes overseeing tax compliance, planning, advisory, and reporting for expatriates and international assignees. The role requires a deep understanding of global tax laws, international mobility programs, and cross-border tax planning strategies.
The Expatriate Tax Manager will work closely the following groups to ensure the efficient administration of global mobility tax programs.
HR, Global Mobility, Legal, Finance, Payroll and External service providers Key Responsibilities:Expatriate Tax Compliance:
Manage the third-party service provider responsible for tax filings and reporting obligations for expatriates, including individual income tax returns, tax equalization calculations, and expatriate tax projections, and ensure the third-party service provider: Reviews and ensures compliance with local, state, federal, and international tax regulations, including tax treaties, social security, and benefits for expatriates Monitors tax deadlines and prepares accurate, timely filings of expatriate tax returns, including preparation of working papers and documentation to support filingsInternational Tax Advisory:
Advise HR, Finance, and Global Mobility teams on tax implications of international assignments, including relocation, stock options, compensation, fringe benefits, and travel Provide guidance on tax equalization policies, tax protection, and tax treaty analysis to ensure that expatriates are not overburdened by tax obligations Advise on global payroll, social security coordination, and other international assignment-related issuesExpatriate Tax Planning:
Develop and implement tax planning strategies to optimize tax efficiency for expatriates and the company Evaluate potential tax risks associated with international assignments, including planning for expatriates working in high-tax jurisdictions Manage compensation packages to minimize tax implications for expatriates while adhering to company policies and local tax requirementsCross-border Tax Coordination:
Collaborate with external tax advisors, local tax authorities, and other stakeholders to ensure the proper handling of cross-border tax issues Liaise with finance teams and third-party vendors to ensure correct tax filings and reconciliation with payroll Process Improvement & Documentation: Streamline and improve internal expatriate tax compliance processes, ensuring the team stays current with best practices and tax regulations Maintain detailed and organized records of expatriate assignments, including tax equalization calculations, tax filings, and related documentationReporting & Analysis:
Provide regular updates to senior leadership regarding expatriate tax compliance status, tax liabilities, and risks Assist in preparing reports for the global tax department, including budgeting and forecasting for expatriate tax costs Team Management & Development: Provide training to other departments (HR, Finance, Legal) on expatriate tax matters as neededOther Responsibilities:
On a monthly basis, coordinate with Finance to obtain information related to the Company’s royalty payments to foreign entities for compliance with U.S. withholding obligations and Form 1042 reportingQualifications & Skills:
Education:
Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Taxation, Finance, or a related field. CPA, Enrolled Agent (EA), or relevant international tax qualifications preferred. Master’s degree in Taxation (MST) or LLM in Taxation is a plus.
Experience:
A minimum of 7 years of experience as a Manager in expatriate tax services, international tax, or global mobility tax planning. Strong knowledge of U.S. and international tax compliance, including tax treaties, social security agreements, and expatriate tax equalization policies. Experience working with multinational corporations and managing complex cross-border tax issues.
Skills:
In-depth understanding of expatriate tax law, global mobility policies, and tax compliance requirements. Strong analytical, problem-solving, and organizational skills. Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to collaborate effectively across departments and geographies. High level of proficiency with tax software, MS Office Suite (Excel, Word, PowerPoint), SAP, Hyperion, and experience with global mobility platforms. Detail-oriented with the ability to manage multiple tasks and deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
Other:
Ability to work independently and manage a diverse set of responsibilities.
