Experimental Machinist / Maritime Technician

If so, we're looking for someone like you to join our team at APL. We are seeking an Experimental Machinist / Maritime Technician to help build and test complex systems. You would support the design, fabrication, debugging, repairing and installation of various systems for testing onboard US Navy platforms. As an Experimental Machinist / Maritime Technician you will… Primarily be responsible for providing electro-mechanical design, fabrication, assembly and trouble-shooting skills on a variety of complex systems in the shop or on field tests. Design, draw and build components using computer automated design (CAD) tools and in-house machining tools (lathes, milling machines, drill presses, CNC machines). Support coordination and fabrication of parts and assemblies with the machine shop, engineers, other technicians within, or outside of, the lab. Support field and at-sea testing onboard Navy platforms to include site surveys, ship checks, installation, test and maintenance, and recovery of installed systems. Support coordination of shop/high bay spaces, various vehicles/boats used for testing, and complex material lists to support test efforts. Maintain equipment needed for fabrication, assembly and testing, as well as purchasing general purpose tools to support shop functions. Manage and track fabrication work orders and associated parts for assembly, delivery, and shipment purposes Qualifications You meet our minimum qualifications for the job if you... Have relevant experience in industry or military, fabricating, assembling, testing, troubleshooting and repairing electro-mechanical systems. Have hands-on experience with machinist equipment – to include CNC, lathe, drill press, and other types of mechanical fabrication equipment. Machinist apprenticeship or equivalent experience to include CNC machining and welding is preferred. Have strong organizational skills with assembling material lists for complex systems - including specifying components, arranging logistics with other technicians, materials procurement, and creating supporting technical drawings and documentation Can work independently and multi-task in a fast-paced work environment with tight delivery schedules. Are able to work and communicate as a member of a diverse team of technicians and engineers with varying experience and backgrounds. Are willing and able to work in classified laboratories, travel to test locations on board US military or research vessels, in the desert, mountains, and/or other remote locations for 15% of your time and you can lift over 50 lbs. Are able to obtain an Interim Secret level security clearance by your start date and can ultimately obtain a Secret level clearance. If selected, you will be subject to a government security clearance investigation and must meet the requirements for access to classified information. Eligibility requirements include U.S. citizenship. You'll go above and beyond our minimum requirements if you... Have an Associate Degree from a two-year college or technical trade school. Have 5+ years or relevant experience in industry or military Have experience with design, fabrication, integration, testing and deployment of complex electromechanical systems, from initial concept through fabrication and bench/field tests. Experience supporting at-sea tests from ocean-going vessels including shipboard installations, maritime procedures, and/or familiarity with deployment and recovery operations at sea. Have experience with electromechanical maintenance on large vehicles – i.e. cars, boats, or large machinery. Have experience in production, manufacturing, warehousing, large scale equipment logistics and/or maritime site work. Have hands-on experience with electronics fabrication tools. Have experience with Quality Assurance practices and for safe operating and/or fabrication within working environments. Have real-world hands-on experience with military electronics and electro-mechanical systems. Hold a current USCG 25 Ton Master Mariner Credential or higher, along with recent sea experience. Hold a current FAA Part 107 Remote Pilot Certificate and are experienced with manually piloting multirotor or VTOL UAVs. Hold an active Secret or Top Secret security clearance. Why work at APL? The referenced pay range is based on JHU APL’s good faith belief at the time of posting. Actual compensation may vary based on factors such as geographic location, work experience, market conditions, education/training and skill level with consideration for internal parity. For salaried employees scheduled to work less than 40 hours per week, annual salary will be prorated based on the number of hours worked. APL may offer bonuses or other forms of compensation per internal policy and/or contractual designation. Additional compensation may be provided in the form of a sign-on bonus, relocation benefits, locality allowance or discretionary payments for exceptional performance.
