Exploration Geologist
Job Description

Ensure Kinross’ exploration project pipeline is adequately stocked with quality projects and that projects are professionally and efficiently evaluated. Support other roles to maximize Kinross’ chance of realizing full value on existing assets and the acquisition of new high value opportunities. Be a key member of exploration and business development groups within the company. Take ownership of exploration projects and manage them both from technical evaluation side and land management / disciplined deal aspect.
Reports to Director of Greenfields Exploration, USA.
Anticipate 50% of time is field based, primarily in the US Great Basin.
 

Job Responsibilities

Essential Functions
    Initiates grass roots exploration opportunities in Kinross’s focus areas of operation 
    Manages activities of contractors and consultants assisting the USAGF team
    Produces desk top evaluations and participates in live evaluations where appropriate
    Provide assessments and technical recommendations to Corporate Exploration and Development teams
    Analyzes and interprets information such as geologic mapping, geophysical mapping, geochemical mapping as well as RC and core drilling data, within the assigned region
    Maintains detailed, accurate and current databases of information for mineral resources 
    Conducts research to support decision making and improve processes, technologies or methodologies
    Keeps on top of trends related to geology and other fields that might improve efficiency in developing, handling, and interpreting geologic data and incorporates this information into work assignments and approach
    Undertakes field examinations of submittals and active exploration projects; carries out technical functions (mapping, drill hole logging, etc.) when appropriate
    Responds to a variety of internal and / or external requests such as providing technical advice on exploration activities; consults with Mine Engineering staff regarding mine design; and, consulting with outside (independent) consultants regarding exploration permitting, community relations, health and safety, and  environmental issues
    Prepares required documents for exploration activities, including business cases for projects and initiatives, and provides status update reports for key stakeholders
    Actively seeks mentorship and learning to improve technical knowledge and skill set
    Monitors costs related to exploration geology and implements approved recommendations for maximizing operational efficiencies
 

Education and Experience

1.    Possesses good communication and interpersonal skills 
2.    General understanding of mining operations, milling, and maintenance operations
3.    Proficient PC user utilizing word processing, spreadsheets, databases, and presentation software
4.    Strong verbal, written, analytical and persuasive skills and the ability to interact effectively with all levels of employees and management
5.    Ability to work independently, but also as a member of the management team 
6.    Demonstrates strong administrative, organizational, and technical writing skills
7.    Formal professional designation in appropriate area of exploration geology 
8.    BS or BA degree in Geology or a related science is required, and a graduate degree is considered an asset
9.    Minimum of 2 years of mineral exploration industry work experience Advanced knowledge of exploration, drilling and assaying techniques
10.    Previous experience leading a team of highly skilled personnel 
11.    Previous experience in the mining industry
12.    Previous experience overseeing geological activities in Nevada
13.    Advanced knowledge and skill with a PC utilizing office applications and GIS software
14.    Good interpersonal skills required
15.    Comprehensive understanding of field projects
16.    Excellent organizational skills
17.    Must be 18 years old and presently authorized to work in the United States on a full time basis
18.    Requires valid driver’s license

Scope of Responsibility & Complexity
Accountable for exploration activities within Nevada, and may act as an advisor for exploration activities in other regions. Work is performed within broad authority, receiving little direction. Problem resolution requires a substantial degree of resourcefulness to originate new methods of analysis and / or methods of operation. Work is highly specialized in its complexity and involves a high degree of independent judgment to develop policies, processes, and systems in situations where considerable variation in interpretation is possible. Provides general direction to staff with a major emphasis on the planning, development, and implementation of programs and. Makes decisions and recommendations in the absence of formal guidelines or precedents.
