The Fabricator and Research Instrumentation Specialist, under direction, provides highly specialized technical skills in the designing, constructing, of prototypes for teaching and research purposes, as well as, in the repair, modification and operation of electronic and mechanical equipment, scientific instruments, instructional and research equipment. Position is on site at the Stephenville campus with work hours of Monday to Friday from 8am to 5pm or as work hours indicate
Responsibilities:
40% Fabrication: Design, construct, and assemble custom tools, components, and prototypes for teaching and research purposes. Operate advanced fabrication equipment, such as CNC machines, lathes, welding tools, autoclave, and 3D printers, ensuring precision and efficiency. Interpret technical drawings and collaborate with students, faculty, and researchers to bring engineering concepts to reality. Provide technical advice on material selection, manufacturability, and design modifications.
20% Repair: Provides highly specialized technical skills for the upkeep, diagnoses and corrects common and basic problems that occur in operation of laboratory equipment; coordinates technical support for more complex issues; facilitates calibration and adjustment of equipment and instruments as requested by faculty and staff.
20% Preventative: Maintains, schedules and manages preventive maintenance for all equipment. If necessary, contacts equipment service company or an agent for advance technical support and assistance. Oversees the maintenance work being performed. Contacts and coordinates with service contractors and relevant campus service units for maintenance and upkeep of lab equipment. Maintains updated procedural manuals. Maintains inventories and records. Maintains a computerized preventive maintenance schedule of primary departmental equipment.
15% Lab safety: Facilitates monitoring of equipment and facilities, monitoring of lab safety and security, and training for faculty, staff and students to use the laboratory equipment and related software; coordinates maintenance of lab safety records, including Tarleton Risk Management documentation, MSDS sheets, etc.
3% Operations: Facilitate ordering materials, components, etc. in support of labs, research and building management as needed and appropriate. Assist with assembly, installation, and setup of new laboratory equipment. Learns proper use of various laboratory equipment as needed. Coordinate timely technology upgrades to the equipment.
2% Other duties: As assigned and necessary for the School of Engineering and Departments, including assisting with lab and equipment setup as feasible and reasonable.
Education and Experience:
Bachelor's degree or any equivalent combination of training and experience. Five years in repairing, operating, and maintaining scientific and/or industrial instrumentation.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Knowledge of word processing, spreadsheet, and database applications. Ability to multitask and work cooperatively with others. Oral and written communication skills.
The target base hourly compensation range is $25.84 to $36.69 and may be negotiable based on funding availability and candidate experience/skillset in relation to the minimum requirements of this position.
