Facilities Engineer

General Description:

The Facilities Engineer provides sound judgment and expertise related to utilities and physical infrastructure supporting production processes, including but not limited to systems providing compressed air, industrial refrigeration, electricity, natural gas, steam, water, HVAC, and effluents. In addition, the Facilities Engineer ensures the coordinated care of company buildings and grounds. This role supports the design and execution of capital and operational improvements to such areas that maximize efficiency and productivity while providing and escalating technical support to production, quality, and other teams in the organization. This position measures and reports key performance metrics, develops contextual information, and makes sound recommendations based on quantitative and qualitative data. The Facilities Engineer completes these functions in support of the manufacture of dairy-related products.

Job Responsibilities:

Use critical thinking and expert judgment to diagnose problems and identify improvement opportunities. Troubleshoot and maintain production process utility systems and related controls. Design, implement, and execute process data collection and analysis. Identify recommended and required physical and software changes to related systems and equipment to ensure maximum reliability and performance. Support coordinated maintenance and care of buildings and property grounds. Mentor and train employees in the duties and skills of this role as assigned or required. Actively support the lifecycle of change and configuration management for equipment and processes. G.enerate and maintain comprehensive documentation in well-organized repositories, including but not limited to proposed and approved changes, trial and production configurations, maintenance activities, performance/quality reporting, and related communications. Track and regularly report on key performance metrics to leadership as assigned. Develop and present potential actions/changes to lower risk, increase value/benefits, and/or leverage available resources to improve work cell performance. Establish and maintain positive relationships with customers, external vendors, and within the organization. LLedand supports the development of capital project planning and strategic capital planning processes.    Develop subject matter expertise within the industry for equipment, processes, and innovation to support strategic initiatives. Partner with other departments to foster innovation, support product launches, improve operational performance, and support the company’s strategic initiatives. Responsible for leading a culture of continuous improvement in all areas while balancing quality, productivity, cost, safety, and morale to achieve positive results. Ensure work areas are sanitary and that biosecurity measures are administered. Establish and maintain a positive work environment including but not limited to maintaining the open door program and resolving moderate to complex workplace concerns. Ensure safety compliance and accident investigations are conducted and corrective actions are taken promptly. Compliant with all legal requirements concerning dairy processing and safety on their assigned shift and reports concerning their supervisor/lead. Works in a safe manner and reports safety concerns promptly to their supervisor/lead and takes corrective actions as necessary to ensure a safe environment. Responsible for reporting food safety problems and initiating action and for supporting SQF by maintaining food safety and food quality. Ensures work areas are sanitary and strictly adhere to sanitation practices. All other duties as assigned by leadership. 

Essential Knowledge, and Skills:

Ability to apply moderate to complex mathematical concepts such as adding, counting, subtracting, multiplying, dividing, and knowledge of weights and measures to sufficiently handle job tasks. Discipline to maintain documentation and communication in an organized, cohesive, and prompt manner. Understand and respond appropriately to simple to complex employee and vendor inquiries. Read, write, and communicate using English language sufficient to perform job functions (Other preferences will be given for special language skills when there is a business need). Knowledge of the f company's mission, purpose, goals, and role in achieving each of them. Satisfactorily complete all company training requirements. Ability to interpret company documents and literature and UPC/code information. Proficiency in programming, troubleshooting, and maintaining industrial utility systems and associated controls, including but not limited to compressed air, water, gas, HVAC, refrigeration, electricity, and effluents. Proficiency in maintaining safety, security, integrity, and appearance of buildings and grounds. Proficiency using Microsoft Word, Excel, and Outlook to track, retrieve, and manage correspondence and information. Advanced mechanical and proficient control troubleshooting skills. Demonstrated ability to work effectively in a team environment.

Education/Experience:

Minimum of GED or High School Diploma is required. 1-2 years experience in industrial utilities required. 1-2 years experience in industrial automation strips only preferred. Experience working in a multi-site manufacturing environment is preferred.

Performance Standards:

Responsible for reporting to work at scheduled times and communicating tardiness and absences with the assigned manager before the occurrence. Responsible for reporting to work in a condition to work. Responsible for being well-groomed and dressed in business- and position-appropriate attire at all times including ensuring compliance with GMP dress code standards. Comply with performance criteria, standards of conduct as contained in company policy, employment procedures, and responsibilities as described in the company handbook. Maintain a safe work environment at all times and immediately report and take appropriate action to correct a safety concern. Responsible for completing all assigned tasks and responsibilities as assigned.

Work Schedule:

Requires occasional work outside standard business days/hours by project, department, and organizational needs. Requests to be scheduled off for a specific day require advance notification and approval by the manager. Generally scheduled for 40 hours; more hours may be required based on the needs of the business.

Environmental Concerns:

Normally protected from weather and temperature changes possible exposure to hot, cold, wet, humid, or windy weather conditions does exist. May be subject to exposure to ingredients used in the manufacture of food products including allergens May be subject to exposure to chemicals involved in the manufacture and sanitation of a food processing facility.

Physical Job Requirements:

Ability to move throughout all areas of the facility including but not limited to office, production, and warehouse environments. Including the outside perimeter of the building. Able to wear all necessary personal protective equipment to perform job functions. Stand and/or sit continuously and perform job functions for a full shift with a meal break. Physically able to stand, bend, stoop, kneel, reach, twist, lift, push, pull, climb, balance, crouch, handle, and move items weighing up to 50 pounds without assistance and move objects exceeding 50 pounds with reasonable accommodations. Visual acuity corrected to perform job functions.

Work location: 

East Syracuse, NY. 

The wage range for this role considers the wide range of factors that are considered in making compensation decisions including but not limited to skill sets; experience and training; licensure and certifications; and other business and organizational needs. At Byrne, it is not typical for an individual to be hired at or near the top of the range for their role, and compensation decisions are dependent on the facts and circumstances of each case. A reasonable estimate of the current range is $88,000 to $116,500.
