Facility Maintenance Technician

The Facility Maintenance Technician is responsible for performing a variety of skilled maintenance and repair tasks to ensure the efficient and reliable operation of a 24/7/365 facility. This role requires a high level of technical expertise and the ability to diagnose and resolve complex issues related to building systems, equipment, and infrastructure.

Primary Duties & Responsibilities

Accountable for conducting more complex inspections and preventative maintenance on building systems and equipment, including HVAC, plumbing, electrical, lighting, etc. and maintains detailed records of all preventive maintenance activities and equipment history. Makes recommendations for improvements to the maintenance program.  Diagnoses and resolves complex or recurring issues with building systems, equipment, and infrastructure. Performs advanced troubleshooting using specialized tools and equipment and interprets complex technical manuals and schematics. Successfully responds to and resolves complex maintenance work orders and service requests in a timely manner. Provides advanced support to facility related items including painting, construction related activities, general labor, conference room set up, snow removal, general building and grounds cleaning.  Required to actively participate in the Emergency Response Team (ERT).  Assists with the planning and execution of facility improvement, renovation, and construction projects. Provides guidance, training, and support to junior facility maintenance technicians. Effectively collaborates with other maintenance staff and outside vendors as needed to complete projects, ensuring projects are completed on time and within budget. Ensures the facility complies with all relevant building codes, safety regulations, and environmental standards, maintaining proper documentation and records for regulatory agencies and audits.

Education & Experience

Must have a high school diploma or equivalent Trade school certificate or technical school degree or equivalent experience preferred Must have at least 3 years of experience in a facility maintenance role

Skills & Other Requirements

Valid driver's license required Must have an advanced understanding of electrical systems, components, and equipment such as wiring, circuit breakers, lighting, etc. Must have an advanced understanding of plumbing systems, pipe fitting, fixtures, and how to resolve clogs, leaks, etc. Must have advanced knowledge of heating, ventilation, and air conditioning equipment and how to maintain and repair it. Must have the ability to perform advanced construction, repair, and maintenance tasks involving doors, walls, floors, etc. Skilled in the use of diagnostic tools, power tools, and computer-based maintenance management systems Must have strong problem-solving, critical thinking, and project management skills Must have excellent communication and ability to work in a team.  Must be able to analyze problems, identify root causes, and create effective solutions. Demonstrate a willingness to learn new skills and technologies. Ability to read and interpret complex equipment manuals, blueprints, and schematics Certifications/Licenses (preferred[MM1] ): HVAC/Refrigeration certification or EPA Section 608 Certification Electrical, plumbing, or other relevant trade certification OSHA 10-Hour or 30-Hour training certification

Working Conditions

Regular exposure to dusts, fumes, heat, noise, cold, and potential exposure to hazardous and toxic materials Performs work in a variety of environments, such as mechanical rooms, electrical rooms, attics, crawl spaces, clean rooms, laboratories or other specialized areas that require strict protocols, PPE and that may be confined, dark, isolated, or poorly ventilated Work may be performed outdoors in variable weather conditions Work may consist of being elevated either on a ladder or lift Working hours may consist of rotating shift, on-call, weekends, and holidays to support 24/7/365 operations

Physical Requirements

Ability to lift, carry, push, or pull heavy objects, equipment, and materials up to 50 lbs Prolonged standing, walking, bending, and reaching Climbing ladders and working at elevated heights Ability to crouch, kneel, and crawl as needed to access and repair equipment Agility to move around the facility, including navigating stairs, uneven surfaces, and tight or confined spaces Good vision, with or without corrective lenses, to read manuals, identify problems, and operate machinery Acute hearing to detect equipment malfunctions and safety hazards Sense of touch to diagnose issues and perform delicate repairs Ability to work long hours, sometimes in overtime situations, to address emergencies or complete projects Endurance to perform physically demanding tasks for extended periods General physical fitness and health to handle the rigors of the job Ability to work in various environmental conditions, such as extreme temperatures, high humidity, or dusty/dirty environments

Safety Requirements

All employees are required to follow the site EHS procedures and COHERENT Corporate EHS standards.

Prior to employment, candidates must successfully pass a physical evaluation associated with the role as a part of a chemical emergency response team (ERT) and wearing a respirator. 

This position is subject to an annual physical evaluation associated with ERT membership and for respirator use.
