Posting Details Job Title Faculty in AI-Infused Autonomous and Connected Systems Applications in the Medical and Healthcare Domain (Tenure Track/Tenured, Position# F0728A1) Department AI CLUSTER HIRE INITIATIVE Position Number F0728A1 Job Description The Batten College of Engineering and Technology at Old Dominion University invites applicants for an assistant, associate, or full professor of autonomous and connected systems engineering to begin in Fall 2025. We seek candidates with a strong background and interest in AI-infused autonomous and connected systems applications in the medical and healthcare domain. Example areas include, but are not limited to: + Robotic surgeries. + Optimal healthcare delivery systems such as medical supplies and services. + Disease tracking. + Diagnostic imaging. + Analysis, decision support systems. + Digital twin technologies in biomedical applications. This is a 10-month tenured/tenure track appointment as part of a multiple position hiring initiative for AI Infused Connected/Autonomous Systems for Medicine and Health. The candidate will have a demonstrated commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion. The Batten College of Engineering and Technology has two institutes that the candidate will be able to work with, in addition to other members of the cluster. The Institute of Autonomous and Connected Systems ( IACS ) and the Institute of Engineering in Medicine, Health, and Human Performance (EnMed). The candidate will be a member of IACS . The IACS Institute brings together faculty and students across the Colleges of Engineering & Technology, Arts & Letters, and Sciences who have mutual interest in advancing the interdisciplinary research and development of autonomous and connected systems including uncrewed and autonomous vehicles in air, land, space, and maritime applications. The Institute serves to elevate awareness of ODU’s expertise in autonomous and connected systems, connect ODU researchers with relevant industry and government agencies, and pursue large team-based funding opportunities. IACS has an education mission and supports an undergraduate certificate program and a minor in Engineering, Design and Operation of Uncrewed Aerial Systems. The vision of IACS is to be recognized as a leader of innovation and applications of autonomous and connected systems. The Institute is also poised to create opportunities for research collaboration between the BCET , the Virginia Modeling, Analysis and Simulation Center ( VMASC ), and industry partners in the Hampton Roads regions. The candidate will be able to: + Develop an interdisciplinary and externally funded research program in the area of AI-infused autonomous and connected systems application in the medical and healthcare domain + Collaborate with other faculty hired in this cluster and other faculty at Old Dominion University (e.g., the school of Data Science, Batten College of Engineering and Technology, etc.), the Hampton Roads Biomedical Research Consortium, and the Macon and Joan Brock Virginia Health Sciences + Teach undergraduate and graduate engineering courses in one of the five departments in the Batten College of Engineering and Technology. Position Type FullTime Type of Recruitment General Public Type of Recruitment General Public Minimum required education and/or special licenses, registrations, trainings, or certifications Ph.D. or equivalent terminal degree in engineering or other closely related field relevant by May 2025 and complementary to the cluster’s core areas of research and be eligible for an appointment in one of the academic departments in the BCET . Minimum required level and type of experience, knowledge, skills, and abilities Candidate for associate or full professor must have a demonstrated sustained track record of external federal funding and peer reviewed research publications Preferred Qualifications Substantial expertise and experience in one or more of the following areas (not in the order of preference): control theory, applied automatic control, flight control, navigation, sensor fusion, simultaneous localization and mapping ( SLAM ), sensing and actuation technologies, vehicular communication, underwater vehicles, simulation-based testing and evaluation, artificial intelligence, embedded systems.
