Pay Grade: 26N* Context of the Job: Under general supervision and following standard operating procedures, assists researchers and supervisors, collects data related to animal research and performs mechanical duties. The primary emphasis is preparation of facilities for research and teaching projects. Maintains buildings and equipment in good working conditions and performs various duties related to the care and management of poultry. Independent judgment is required to resolve routine problems. Major Responsibilities: + Supervise and assist preparation of poultry facilities for research, teaching and extension. + Maintain poultry facilities that include: cleaning, disinfecting, and general repair. + Assist project leaders in caring for experimental animals and collecting data. + Supervise and assist in performing routine tasks necessary for the proper care of animals on the Poultry Farm, Allen Lab & Worrilow Hall, including: providing water, feed, bedding heat, lighting and ventilation. + Supervise and assist in the routine tasks of egg collection, labeling, incubation, and hatching. + Performs poultry care duties including beak trimming, vaccination, wing banding and euthanasia. + Supervise and assist in the pick up and disposal of soiled bedding, accumulated trash, lab waste and animals. + Operate and clean unit incinerator and composter. + Assist in the decontamination of poultry facilities using formaldehyde gas. + Supervise and assist in performing basic maintenance work including painting, plumbing, carpentry, electrical and grounds maintenance. + Operate farm machinery including: front-end loader, tractor, mower and manure spreader. + Supervise and train Farm Assistant I’s and biweekly employees in proper performance of routine farm duties. + May perform duties of the Poultry Farm Manager in their absence. + Perform miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned. Environmental Factors/Occupations Exposures: The physical environment requires the employee to work both inside and outside in heat/cold, wet/humid, and dry/arid conditions. Frequently required to use personal protective equipment to prevent exposure to hazardous materials. Education, Experience, and Abilities: + Requires a minimum of a high school diploma or GED with three years of farm experience operating various types of equipment and machinery. Knowledge of poultry/livestock management preferred. + Basic plumbing, carpentry, electrical and/or mechanical skills. + Ability to communicate effectively and interact well with people of all ages and diverse backgrounds. Special Requirements: With or without assistance, must be able to routinely lift up to 50 pounds. Must be able to work in cramped areas and positions for extended periods of time, climb ladders, wear respirator and self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA). Employment is dependent upon passing a University-specified medical evaluation related to the use of respiratory protection equipment. Must be able to pass a criminal background check. Ability to work after normal working hours to assist with farm emergencies and on weekends and holidays on a rotational basis.
