FDOT Field Technician
Overview:   Universal Engineering Sciences (UES) has an opening in our Construction Services Department. UES is a nationwide leader in Geotechnical Engineering, Construction Materials Testing and Inspection, Building Code Compliance, Environmental, Occupational Health & Safety, and Building Envelope.
Summary:The Field Technician is a key role responsible for the day-to-day completion of work assignments related to testing concrete, soils, asphalt, and other construction materials. The ideal candidate is a reliable, trustworthy individual who thrives in a fast-paced environment where collaboration and autonomy are valued.

Physical Demands & Work Environment: · Required to drive, stand, walk, use hands to type, handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms; climb or balance, talk, and hear; body motions and movements include bending, twisting, reaching, stooping, pulling, kneeling, lifting, carrying, and pushing, with or without reasonable accommodation· The employee must regularly lift and/or move up to 35 lbs and occasionally lift and/or move up to 75 lbs, with or without reasonable accommodation· The testing process for the various construction materials (i.e., soils, concrete, asphalt, etc.) is repetitive in nature several times per hour· The technician’s primary duty is to test soil densities and concrete samples (air, temperature, mix design, etc.), as well as testing other construction materials.  Testing these samples requires extensive manual lifting and handling· Weights in the 0-75-lbs range are lifted frequently (From 33% up to 66% of the task period) with a frequency range 10 – 35 repetitions per hour, with or without reasonable accommodation · Weights in the range of 35 – 75+ lbs (concrete cylinders and soils) are lifted frequently (From 15% to 30% of the task period) with a range of 5 - 15 repetitions per hour, with or without reasonable accommodation  · Construction materials are manually lifted and carried distances on average ranging from a few feet to 75 feet, but may occasionally exceed 75 ft in walking distance and are unloaded manually at our lab and carried inside for testing, with or without reasonable accommodation  · On average the workdays range from 7 - 12 hours  · Job site conditions may or may not be accessible by vehicle, including wetlands, swamps, grasslands, and fields with uneven surfaces, sand, brush, and other natural and man-made obstacles· The testing work is performed outside on the field with exposure to: dirt, dust, sun, heat, and humidity · This job is primarily and regularly exposed to outside weather conditions and construction sites where the noise level is usually moderate to loudEssential Duties and Responsibilities:Ensure that all testing equipment used is functioning properly, maintained as required by company and/or manufacturer's policy, and that all calibrated equipment is within its calibration cycleEnsure that project testing requirements are met and compliant with project specifications, requirements, and company policies or proceduresDrive to job sites and conduct testing of soil, concrete, and other construction materialsReturn samples to the office for testingReport data in an accurate, complete, timely, and understandable fashion in accordance with applicable testing proceduresOperating testing equipment; ensure that all test equipment used is functioning properly and maintained as required by the company and/or manufacturer's policy and that all calibrated equipment is within its calibration cycleOperate a motor vehicle; maintain company vehicle (schedule oil changes, check fluid levels, inside/outside upkeep)Communicate with dispatching and/or field supervisor, advising of current job status and locations as required; cellular phones are to be worn at all times, and calls are to be returned immediatelyRegular attendance is required; technicians must arrive on time for scheduled jobsPrepare testing reports using Field Data Collection (FDC) software; ability to write and retrieve emails using Microsoft Outlook Must be willing to travel within the state of Florida, if applicableComplete daily time and labor reports in accordance with company policyTurn in required paperwork dailyRegular attendance is requiredMust be flexible to changing schedules and hours to support business needs; overnight and weekends schedules may be necessary to support business needs Follow all company safety procedures and policies Other duties may be assigned Education and/or Experience: Valid Florida Driver’s License with an acceptable driving record (in accordance with our Driver’s License and Motor Vehicle Record Check Criteria)Ability to pass a background check screening in accordance with Florida’s Jessica Lunsford Act (or equivalent state classification)Ability to read & write, including interpreting documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals, as well as the ability to write routine reports and correspondence and speak effectively with colleagues, supervisors, and customers/clients Computer skills sufficient to operate a laptop, including sending and receiving emails, and the ability to learn Field Data Collection (FDC)/Inspector Gadget to input data and prepare reports Mathematical skills sufficient to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals Reasoning ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, and diagram formRequired Qualifications:High School Diploma, GED or equivalentACI Level I CertificationEarthworks Construction Inspection Certification - Level I and IIWho We Are:   UES provides essential engineering services for some of the most prominent and significant projects in the nation.
