Federal Income Tax Counsel
Job Description

Work Arrangement

This role is categorized as hybrid. This means the successful candidate is expected to report to Renaissance Center, Detroit, Michigan, three times per week, at minimum.

The Role

The Domestic Income Tax Counsel manages GM’s Federal Income Tax audit and controversy, serving as the main contact with the IRS. The ideal candidate will advise on proposed federal tax legislation, law changes, tax impacts of new business initiatives, and coordinate filing positions with GM’s Domestic Tax Analysis Group. This role requires independent judgment, decision-making, accuracy, creativity, and initiative.  

What You'll Do

Act as GM's main liaison with the IRS Compliance Assurance Program (CAP) auditors, coordinating all necessary meetings, delivering information and analysis to auditors, offering strategic evaluation of proposed adjustments and audit workpapers, and overseeing the relationship between the GM tax operations teams to ensure consistency in audit responses.

Collaborate with the Director of Tax Policy to advise the GM Public Policy team on federal tax legislative impacts

Provide advice to business counterparts on the impact of changes in federal tax law, payroll and benefits tax and new business initiatives, and coordinate tax filing positions with GM’s Domestic Tax Analysis Group 

Prepare necessary presentations and analysis appropriate for both tax and non-tax stakeholders

Manage documentation of U.S. federal uncertain federal tax positions, including strategic review of quarterly submissions 

Collaborate with others in Domestic Tax Counsel on indirect and direct tax matters, modeling and analysis and represent Domestic Counsel in Tax Staff and broader Finance sessions as needed (special projects, developing and present data and recommendations, participating in key meetings, etc.) 

Assist with other tax matters within the Domestic Tax Counsel Group on an as-needed basis 

Creatively solve problems and identify and implement process improvements

Additional Job Description

Your Skills & Abilities (Required Qualifications)

Bachelor’s degree (or an equivalent) from an accredited university with focus in accounting, finance, business, or taxation 

8+ years of relevant large accounting firm, law firm, or private industry experience

Strong business acumen   

Ability to manage workload within statutory and internal deadlines, prioritizing assignments 

Strong tax research and writing skills 

Demonstrated experience and subject matter expertise in federal tax matters 

Experience with controversy management and/or issue resolution with government counterparties 

Flexible, hands-on, self-motivated, with strong interpersonal, team and partnering skills 

A company vehicle will be provided for this role with successful completion of a Motor Vehicle Report review.

J.D. from an accredited law school and a member of the bar in good standing

Ability to effectively communicate actionable recommendations
