About the Role: Imagine yourself as a Field Communications Network Specialist, responsible for delivering secure, performant, reliable, and efficient end-to-end network services for Industrial Control Systems (ICS), Automation, Drilling, and other critical business unit network services in West Texas and New Mexico Business Units. You will analyze, troubleshoot, and resolve complex networking issues, utilize IT Service Management tools, and ensure optimal operations of network services.

Responsibilities: 

Operational Activity: 

Analyze, troubleshoot, and resolve complex networking problems impacting business applications and services. 

Utilize IT Service Management tools to document, manage, and resolve operational, infrastructure, or hardware incidents and request items. 

Monitor automated alerts generated by system management tools and make decisions on the most effective resolution. 

Be available 24/7 while on-call, including use of a cell phone for off-hours support and weekend on-call status. 

Travel to field locations to restore services at Towers, Communication Shelters, Fiber Vaults, Well Facilities, and other field locations housing network equipment. 

Provide solutions to complex problems integrating various technologies, including connectivity issues. 

Collaborate with IT, managers, and other stakeholders to develop action plans for improved operations. 

Participate in the design, testing, and deployment of network technologies throughout the field. 

Install, configure, test, and maintain operation of upgraded and new network-related devices and services based on user- and service-defined requirements. 

Engage deeply with business units to ensure deadlines and objectives are well understood and met. 

Assist in identifying hardware/software needs and provide advice regarding current options, policies, and procedures. 

Unbox, inventory, test, and install field communications hardware at sites in the work region. 

Work to join infrastructure to a cloud management platform, central management, and monitoring tools. 

Schedule formal change requests to field network systems for firmware updates, security changes, and other configuration changes. 

Set and achieve goals necessary for the optimization of field network focusing on people, processes, and technology. 

Manage the lifecycle of assigned field network projects, including initiating, planning, budgeting, executing, procurement, documentation, closing, and continuous improvement. 

Coordinate asset and inventory management for field network infrastructure. 

Document technical processes and troubleshooting guidelines. 

Document system designs, as-built diagrams, and all operational data about field area networks and publish on the intranet as guidelines for the entire organization. 

Participate in the analysis and selection of new technology required for expanding computing needs throughout the organization. 

Work with competing vendors to determine the best selection based on price, technical functionality, durability, manufacturer support, manufacturer vision, and position. 

 

Competencies: 

In-depth understanding and troubleshooting skills of cabling infrastructure (Layer 1 - Fiber, Copper), common wired network devices, IP telephony, two-way radio, local area networks, wide area networks, and potential connectivity issues. 

Results-oriented and creative in applying expert technical knowledge to solve problems. 

Collaborative with peers in learning expert-level knowledge proactively before it is needed. 

Takes risks by participating in innovative activities or those requiring new knowledge or emerging technologies. 

Understands the concepts of scope and time/resource management and can proactively plan complex project work involving multiple disciplines. 

Proactively seeks out and successfully participates in and collaborates on highly complex assigned project work that spans different technical domains. 

Understands complex documents and effectively composes documentation and presentations spanning multiple disciplines. 

Effectively communicates different types of complex problems and resolutions in simple terms to different types of audiences. 

 

Preferred Qualifications: 

College graduate in Computer Science, MIS, Engineering, or a related field preferred; equivalent work experience pertaining to information technologies and/or telecommunications may be acceptable. 

Experience designing, supporting, deploying, or designing networks. 

Experience with RF, communications towers, and/or any telecommunications facilities design, construction, and start-up/commissioning processes. 

Experience working on structured cabling and fiber optic infrastructure, including design and installation best practices and industry standards. 

Experience with internet networking technologies (TCP/IP, routing, switching) and optical transport technologies. 

Experience with process improvement and automating repetitive workflows with software. 

Track record of solving problems, setting strategic direction, and executing tactically. 

Experience working with on-site construction teams and managing general contractor and vendor relationships. 

Must meet all conditional job offer requirements, including background check, drug screening, hair follicle test, MVR, agility, and fit for duty. 

 

Physical Requirements: 

Must be able to lift 40 lbs., climb ladders, and stairs. 

Walking, bending, and stooping are required. 

Must be able to wear personal protective equipment, including the use of a respirator. 

Must be able to respond to visual and audible alarms.
