Job Description
Our client has a current opening for a Utility Technician who will support our customers and stakeholders, striving to exceed expectations with all our services, including Communications Design Services, Energy Distribution Services, Utility Pole Inspection, and Environmental Services. They offer a broad range of professional, engineering, and technical services to the telecommunications and power delivery markets.
ResponsibilitiesCollect field data utilizing tripod-mounted GPS unit (EOS Arrow Gold), laser range finder (TruPulse 200x), and tablet (iPad Pro 11).Take field notes and complete data collection for fiber optic internet design utilizing existing power infrastructure.Document field data and take measurements of existing utilities and communications attached to power company poles.Utilize ESRI Collector to document and compile collected field data.Walk around rural areas to electric power poles, carrying necessary equipment and taking laser measurements.Take photos of poles and electric meters, documenting power crossings over highways and roads.Essential SkillsKnowledge of power poles and their components (cross arm drip loops, transformers, communication attachments, etc.).Ability to travel and stay overnight as required for job completion.Possess a valid driver’s license and reliable transportation.Ability to walk long distances through rugged terrain and in various weather conditions.Detail-oriented with the ability to adapt and problem solve.Proficiency in Microsoft Office and ability to learn new software.Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.Ability to meet daily data collection goals.Ability to lift/carry at least 25 lbs.Additional Skills & QualificationsExperience with GPS units and tablets for data collection.Basic troubleshooting skills for software/hardware in the field.Work Environment
This is a 100% field role in rural areas, involving walking in rough terrain and various weather conditions (rain, snow, cold, heat). The role requires working alone for long hours, but within a few miles of other employees. The work is physically demanding, involving carrying a tripod, iPad, and laser/GPS equipment. The work location is within an hour's radius from Columbus, Ohio. Lodging is provided in motels, with each technician getting their own room. The workday starts before sunrise and ends at sundown, Monday through Friday, with an 8-hour shift on Saturdays. The work week is capped at 70 hours, with weekend rotations home every 3-4 weeks. High visibility vests are provided, while hard hats are optional. Good walking boots are required but not provided. The project is expected to continue through Spring 2026, with opportunities for further work or projects in other states.
