PURPOSE OF THE POSITION:

 

The CPKC Field Technician utilizes mechanical locomotive, “hands on” experience and knowledge, to provide overall technical assistance to CPKC’s locomotive facilities.  This role will provide technical troubleshooting support on GE and EMD locomotives. The selected candidate will help to facilitate on-the-job training of craft employees and will interact daily with facility staff and team to increase locomotive knowledge.  The CPKC Field Technician will work closely with the Superintendent and General Shop Foreman, as well as the technical training group to help effectively manage the Diesel Mechanic Apprentice program. The CPKC Field Technician will identify gaps in craft training and will provide support and strategies to improve the locomotive, knowledge base of shop, craft employees. 

The CPKC Field Technician will also work closely with the head office, locomotive, reliability team on any trends or reliability issues on the various locomotives and will play a critical role in supporting the implementation of new modifications, software updates and new technology, including PTC and RCLS.  This support will include physical involvement in modification pilots, and the selected candidate will need to review and provide feedback on work instructions. The Field Technician will train craft employees on the work.  The ideal candidate will also interact closely with the locomotive, reliability team on locomotive subsystem performance, trending and improvement action plans.  This role will require travel and flexibility in schedule, to ensure support and training is provided on all shifts of the operation.

 

POSITION ACCOUNTABILITIES:

 

Support the implementation of proactive and predictive running and overhaul fleet maintenance strategies and fleet reliability improvement programs for all critical locomotive subsystems through the use of hands-on knowledge and experience Distribute communications and technical instructions (work scopes, technical tips, quality alerts and other bulletins) for new maintenance policies, reliability improvement programs and other modifications Audit shop compliance of documented work scopes, maintenance policies and processes for all fleets, programs and component repairs Assist & provide feedback to the management team and craft employees on locomotive troubleshooting and  repair strategies Offer overall technical support at the facility for all locomotive fleets and systems, including PTC, RCLS and also as required be available to assist other facilities with issues that need immediate attention Provide the mechanical shop with technical, on-site support and training as required for program implementation and/or new technology As required, evaluate new locomotive technologies to support locomotive reliability Oversee and support on-site, on-the-job training for craft employees, including apprentice rotation and qualification, and training on new fleets, programs and technology Work with T&E when locomotive problems arise & “operator error” is identified during the drill down Be responsible for hands on training to new hires and cross functional training in conjunction with technical training;Get heavily involved in troubleshooting at the shop level to ensure employees are successful in fail mode identification and correction Provide guidance on Locomotive modifications and upgrades as well as troubleshooting Guide and support locomotive operation testing Give support and feedback to reliability team on failure trends and on locomotive modifications

 

POSITION REQUIREMENTS:

 

Must have a High School Diploma or General Equivalence Diploma; post-secondary an asset 10-15 years field experience in locomotive maintenance on GE and EMD locomotive fleets Field experience on North American locomotive maintenance Proficiency in Microsoft Applications SAP Plant Maintenance an asset Strong coaching skills Strong locomotive background; electrical & mechanical Bilingual, with the ability to communicate both written and verbally in English and French

Management Conductor Program:
