Field Trainer/Staff Inspector
Job Description The Department of Transportation’s (DOT) mission is to provide for the safe, efficient, and environmentally responsible movement of people and goods in the City of New York and to maintain and enhance the transportation infrastructure crucial to the economic vitality and quality of life of our primary customers, City residents. The selected candidates will be responsible for training, evaluating, and supervising the work of the field inspection staff; coordinates and reviews inspector’s daily assignments; reviews and evaluates inspectors work and reports, providing valuable information on the inspection staff for rating performance evaluations, and provides training and guidance as needed; assists with developing training policies and procedures and creates training modules to assist inspectors; reviews the issuance/dismissal of violations; troubleshoot, replace or repair inspector’s equipment, Tablet/IPAD; serves as a liaison to the general public and elected officials; conducts inquiries and field inspections in response to public complaints, and any other problems involving the work performed by the field inspection staff; issues summonses and appears in court when required; responds timely to work related emails, phone calls, or text messages; responds to operational/administrative requests (including special projects), from the Assistant Commissioner & Executive Staff; reviews and signs inspector summonses, timesheets, probationary reports, and performance evaluations when needed; attends field and office meetings; attends training classes and workshops, may supervise the Borough Office in the absence of the Borough Manager or Deputy. Qualifications 1. Six years of full-time paid experience in the construction and/or repair of roads and sewers, one year of which must have been in a supervisory capacity; or 2. Four years of experience, as described in "1" above, at least one year of which must have been in a supervisory capacity, plus two years of education in an accredited college or technical school in a program specializing in the construction or repair of roads and sewers, or education toward a baccalaureate degree in Engineering, Architecture or Engineering Technology with a specialization in the area of roads or sewers; or 3. At least one year of experience, as described in "1" above, which must have been in a supervisory capacity, plus completion of an approved five year apprenticeship program in highway or sewer inspection; or 4. Completion of three years of apprenticeship in highway or sewer inspection plus either three years of experience as described in "1" above, one year of which must have been in a supervisory capacity, or one year of experience as described in "1" above, which must have been in a supervisory capacity and two years of education as described in "2" above; or 5. Education and/or experience which is equivalent to "1", "2", "3", or "4" above. All candidates must have one year of experience as described in "1" above, which must have been in a supervisory capacity.
