Job Description
The Financial Aid Advisor II, under direction, counsels and provides student financial aid and scholarship information to prospective and currently enrolled students and their families. Facilitates workshops, develops and makes presentations on and off campus to groups regarding financial aid and scholarships. May coordinate or specialize in a specific program. May provide some mentorship and training to other staff.
Responsibilities:
+ Advises and counsels students, parents, and/or prospective students in solving their educational financial problems through scholarships, loans, grants, employment and financial counseling.
+ Responds to questions and counseling needs in-person and by written, phone, and e- mail means from currently enrolled students, prospective students and parents.
+ Provides loan and indebtedness counseling to students on an individual and group basis.
+ Assists students with specialized needs such as Study Abroad, Vocational Rehabilitation, Graduate, and International Students.
+ Assists outreach staff with prospective students and in their transition to current students.
+ Performs reviews of student files, collecting supporting documentation and making adjustments as needed.
+ Awards, revises and/or approves the awarding of financial aid through the specific controls of program policy and guidelines.
+ Makes adjustments, if necessary, for compliance issues, and submits the corrections through the mainframe correction process or submits through Electronic Data Exchange (EDE).
+ Reviews Satisfactory Academic Progress appeals and makes decisions regarding the validity of these appeals and any other steps the student must take to satisfy judgment rendered to re-establish eligibility for financial aid or scholarships.
+ Serves as regularly scheduled Quick Queue agent and assists with coverage of front counter in the main reception area of department, greeting visitors, answering inquiries regarding federal financial aid forms, records, procedures, and policies.
+ Serves as a back-up counselor and a walk-in counselor on a weekly basis.
+ Provides assistance and guidance to other financial aid staff to ensure that processing activities adhere to established policies and procedures.
+ Assists with conducting on and off campus presentations, seminars, and/or workshops for students (particularly high schools) and possibly for professional development training.
+ May work at resource tables as requested by groups from TAMU, prospective student groups and others.
+ Participates in the review, revision, and interpretation of complex rules, regulations, procedures and policies relating to general financial aid, scholarships, and team specialty area(s).
+ Interprets and maintains knowledge of current federal, state and institutional policies, procedures and regulations pertaining to financial aid, student employment and scholarships.
+ Assists in developing and revising financial aid consumer information materials, publications and brochures for currently enrolled students, prospective students and their parents, colleges, departments, and university use.
+ Assists in planning and executing special events for specific audiences and in support of departmental initiatives.
+ May coordinate or serve as a resource for a specialized program for financial aid.
Required Education and Experience:
+ Bachelor’s degree in related field.
+ One (1) year of related experience.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
+ Knowledge of word processing and spreadsheet applications.
+ Knowledge of financial aid counseling, verification, rules and regulations.
+ Ability to multitask and work cooperatively with others.
+ Oral and written communication skills.
+ Customer Service skills.
+ Ability to work individually or as a team.
+ Ability to organize and make decisions.
+ Ability to relate well with a multicultural student population.
