Financial Counselor
Summary Serves as the central patient advocate for uninsured and underinsured patients. Responsible for conducting an in-depth evaluation of each patient’s financial history and responsible for individually coordinating payment sources for all rendered hospital services. Performs all functions in a compassionate and respectful manner, advocating for the patient’s best interest and well-being. In addition, assists patient access staff in insurance verification for all applicable accounts, as well as provides information to the billing department to ensure accurate billing of current and future services. Completes review and follow-up on third party liability accounts to ensure accurate and complete billing information is obtained. Collaborates with insurance enrollment vendor to establish payment methods for self-pay or underinsured patients. Additional duties include registration, cashiering, setting up payment plans, and collecting on outstanding balances. Education Must be a high school graduate or the equivalent with GED. Associate's degree in business or other healthcare related area preferred, or equivalent experience within a patient access or revenue cycle setting. Experience Must have 2 years in a hospital or clinic setting, patient access, or revenue cycle. Customer service experience required. Prior experience with Epic EMR preferred. Other Qualifications Must have good verbal and written communication skills. Demonstrates good problem solving and critical thinking skills. Ability to use Microsoft programs.
