Reporting to the Vice President, Financial Lines, the Financial Lines Technical Officer will manage a claims team handling Management Liability and Professional Liability Claims for Financial Services accounts.  In addition, the role will be accountable for watch-list claims across D&O, Financial Services/Institutions and Pension Trust Liability. In connection with this subset of claims, this position will manage the watch lists, function as principal liaison with Financial Lines Underwriting/Actuarial teams for purposes of early flagging of new claims of interest, promotion of early identification/communication of coverage opportunities/gaps, identification of problem accounts, class-of-business issues, and jurisdictional developments. The person in this role will become a resource for better strategic discussions on risk exposure, driving settlements and ensuring that coverage positions are consistently mirroring efforts to resolve cases in a uniform manner.

Responsibilities include (but are not limited to):

- Promote consistency in risk analysis and reserving approach, and the sharing of claims-trend and industry-trend information with Senior Business Line Management on a cross-Financial Lines portfolio basis.

- Efficient communication of jurisdictional nuances, event driven litigation, changes in controlling case law, regulatory and legislative changes, and judicial hellholes, to assist underwriting and claims in evaluating risks and drive profitability of the books of business.

- Adopt a unified approach to line-specific Large Loss trend analysis.

- Provide senior leadership with a guided view toward upcoming reserve increases on complex claims – act as “gatekeeper” on significant reserve increases.

- Active participant on roundtables within the Financial Lines claims discussions, as well as representative to Underwriting and Actuaries.

- Represent Financial Lines claims in discussions with Reinsurance partners during claims audits and treaty renewals.

- Ensure high quality claim handling with respect to coverage, liability and damages analysis, litigation management, negotiation strategy and effective resolution.

- Responsible for expense management and compliance with corporate claim standards and procedures, as well as all statutory, regulatory and ethics requirements.

- Effectively communicate and demonstrate a thorough understanding of business vision and strategies and develop plans for achieving business goals.

- Responsible for leading assigned projects and efforts in support of overall Global Specialty goals.

Qualifications:

- Law degree preferred; four-year College Degree required

- 10+ years of experience in the Financial Lines claim space required (preferably in Financial Institutions and Services and/or Public D&O) with experience working on ‘bet the company’ litigation for insureds.

- Candidates are required to have knowledge and experience handling all aspects of Management and Professional Liability claims

- Ability to represent Hartford Global Specialty and our Insureds’ interest on driving settlements and negotiating allocations is required

- Knowledge of mediators and defense and plaintiff counsel is a plus

- Experience with or time in private law practice or with coverage law firms and/or other carriers is a plus

- Excellent oral and written communication skills

- Excellent negotiation, influencing, and advanced technical claim handling skills, including knowledge of insurance coverage issues in the Financial Lines context

This role can have a Hybrid or Remote work arrangement.  Candidates who live near one of our office locations (Hartford, CT, San Antonio, TX, Lake Mary, FL, Phoenix, AZ, Naperville, IL) will have the expectation of working in an office 3 days a week (Tuesday through Thursday).   Candidates who do not live near an office will have a remote work arrangement, with the expectation of coming into an office as business needs arise.

Compensation

The listed annualized base pay range is primarily based on analysis of similar positions in the external market. Actual base pay could vary and may be above or below the listed range based on factors including but not limited to performance, proficiency and demonstration of competencies required for the role. The base pay is just one component of The Hartford’s total compensation package for employees. Other rewards may include short-term or annual bonuses, long-term incentives, and on-the-spot recognition. The annualized base pay range for this role is:

$146,560 - $219,840
