Job Duties
Screens forms returned by prospective patients to ensure that all required information, demographic and financial, is present.
Enters patient data into computerized admission system. Assigns beds where appropriate.
Investigates insurance/benefits coverage for all emergency hospital admissions and for all patients with reservations for elective surgery.
Contacts insurance companies and/or the patient by telephone or in person to verify specific insurance conditions or requirements (i.e., second opinion, pre-certification, mandatory waiting periods); follows up to make sure conditions are met before the patient is admitted.
Obtains from third party insurers, information on the extent and type of benefits available; calculates the patient’s responsibility for payment of deposit or monthly payments in relation to anticipated length of stay.
Advises patients without third party coverage about possible alternatives for their admission (i.e., COBRA, Medicaid, Charity Care).
Places follow-up phone calls for collection of accounts.
Maintains and monitors daily and monthly reports.
Participates in locating and pulling accounts for audit or as needed.

Maintains established departmental policies and procedures, objectives, quality assurance program, safety, environmental, and infection control standards. Assesses gaps in policies and procedures, and create necessary policies and procedures to fulfill these gaps.

BASIC COMPETENCIES
Education/Licensure
High school graduation or equivalent required.
Successful completion of an approved course or program in hospital, physician billing, or third-party insurance preferred.
Experience
Minimum of 1 year of billing or insurance experience in a physician’s office, hospital, or insurance office required, or suitable combination of education and experience.
Skills
Typing: minimum 25 wpm.
Computer literate.
Good interpersonal skills.
Good oral and written communications skills.
Working knowledge of medical terminology and insurance preferred.
Speaks, reads and writes English to the extent required by the position; knowledge of a second language preferred.
JOB SETTING/PHYSICAL DEMANDS
Admitting/Credit Office. Contact with patients, third party insurers.
Mainly sedentary with occasional walking and standing.
Occasional reaching, bending, stooping, crouching, kneeling.
