Engages in hand and bench finish carpentry shop work. Examples of Duties + Performs a variety of work tasks related to construction and alteration of structural elements. + Studies and works from drawings, blueprints, rough sketches, and oral instructions. + Determines materials necessary. + Prepares layout by use of rule framing square and calipers. + Prepares guidelines on materials. + Shapes materials to prescribed measurements by use of saws, chisels, and planes. + Assembles materials and fastens them together. + Erects framework for structure. + Cuts openings for windows and doors. + Installs window frames and sash. + Fits and hangs doors. + Builds and repairs stairways and railings. + Fits and installs prefabricated window frames, doors, doorframes, door locks, weather stripping, interior and exterior trim, and finishing hardware. + Lays sub-flooring, hardwood floors, vinyl, and asphalt tile floors. + Verifies trueness of structures. + Builds, repairs, removes and installs counters, cabinets, shelving, and benches. + Installs or removes partitions. + Re-faces cabinet work. + Erects scaffolding and ladders. + Builds and repairs furniture and other wooden equipment in a carpentry shop. + Applies shock absorbing and sound proofing material to ceilings and walls. Minimum Qualifications + High school graduation or equivalent G.E.D. + Two (2) years of experience in the construction, erection, installation, alteration, and repair of wooden structures and Equipment + Valid State of Michigan Operator License. Employees in this class will be required, when necessary, to operate a motor vehicle, and will be required to provide the tools necessary to perform the work assigned. Qualifications (preferred): + Completion of an approved apprenticeship in carpentry construction. Licenses and Certification: + Employees in this class will be required, when necessary, to operate a motor vehicle, and will be required to provide the tools necessary to perform the work assigned. + Valid State of Michigan Operator License required Equivalency + Equivalent combinations of education and experience that provide the required knowledge, skills, and abilities will be evaluated on an individual basis.
