Fire Inspector
Overview The Fire Inspector supports the Fire Prevention Program at Ascension Auxiliary Airfield (AAAF), a remote U.S. Space Force installation, by executing critical functions to identify, mitigate, and prevent fire hazards across the base. This position ensures compliance with applicable Department of Defense (DoD), Department of the Air Force, and contractual fire protection standards. Key responsibilities include conducting facility fire safety inspections; verifying the operability and compliance of fire protection systems and extinguishers; reviewing construction and renovation plans for code adherence; educating personnel on fire prevention practices; and supporting investigations of fire-related incidents. The Fire Inspector contributes directly to mission assurance by safeguarding life, property, and operational continuity through proactive code enforcement and hazard reduction. Responsibilities + Conduct comprehensive annual fire prevention inspections for all facilities on Ascension Auxiliary Airfield (AAAF) in accordance with AFI 32-2001, applicable NFPA standards, and Appendix G of the contract. + Identify, document, and report fire hazards and fire safety deficiencies (FSDs), ensuring timely follow-up and abatement tracking. + Participate in pre-construction, intermediate, and final facility inspections to validate compliance with fire safety codes, life safety criteria, and egress/access requirements. + Maintain required inspection standards, ensuring no more than two (2) missed inspections per month as defined in performance metrics. + Review facility design plans, modifications, and work requests to verify incorporation of required fire protection features, clearances, and emergency response accessibility. + Represent the Fire Prevention Section at Work Request Review Boards (WRRB0s), facility working group meetings, and design review meetings. + Perform inspection, maintenance, and documentation of approximately 500+ fire extinguishers, including: + Monthly inspections of all facility extinguishers. + Monthly departmental inspections of Halon and dry chemical extinguishers. + Annual inspections of all extinguishers, ensuring compliance with NFPA 10 and manufacturer guidelines. + Support implementation of the Installation Fire Prevention Program, including code enforcement, public fire safety education, and risk mitigation strategies. + Assist in training and awareness programs under the direction of the Assistant Chief of Fire Prevention or designee. + Ensure all activities comply with NFPA 10, DoDI 6055.06, AFI 32-2001, and applicable DoD and U.S. Space Force directives. + Maintain accurate documentation and submit reports to the Contracting Officer Representative (COR) as required. + Maintain cleanliness, accountability, and security of work areas in accordance with G.8.4 contractual standards. Qualifications + Education: + High school diploma or GED is required. + An Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree in Fire Science, Fire Protection Engineering, Emergency Management, or a closely related field is preferred. + Certifications: + All certifications must be accredited by the DoD Fire and Emergency Services Certification Program, IFSAC, or ProBoard, and must meet the requirements of DoDI 6055.06 and AFI 32-2001. The following certifications are required: + Hazardous Materials Awareness – Required + Fire Inspector I & II – Required + Public Fire and Life Safety Educator I – Required + Experience: + Minimum of one (1) year of documented experience in a Fire Inspector duty position. + Must have successfully completed a NFPA 1582-compliant physical examination within the last 12 months and maintain currency throughout the term of employment. + Must comply with NFPA 1975 grooming and appearance standards. (Uniforms are not Government-issued.) + Demonstrated ability to communicate and interact effectively with military leadership, contractor personnel, and installation staff. + Familiarity with fire inspection tracking software and reporting tools such as FES-IMS and Microsoft Office Suite. + Preferred Qualifications + Fire Inspector III and/or Fire Officer I certifications. + Previous experience supporting DoD or U.S. Air Force fire protection contracts. + Working knowledge of Air Force and DoD fire prevention regulations, documentation standards, and reporting procedures. + Working Environment + The applicant must be capable of meeting all medical and physical requirements as defined by the U.S. Government for fire and emergency services personnel. Work is primarily performed in administrative and operational settings; however, the employee may be exposed to environmental conditions including heat, wind, dust, rain, and loud noise during facility inspections and outdoor activities. + The position requires the ability to travel throughout the installation, including remote or restricted areas, in support of the Fire Prevention mission. Work schedules may include rotating shifts, nights, weekends, and holidays based on mission needs and emergency response readiness. + Physical Activities + The position requires frequent lifting, bending, walking, and other physical activities associated with conducting fire inspections, hazard assessments, and fire prevention training. The incumbent must be able to meet and maintain physical fitness requirements as defined by the Government Program Office and applicable DoD policies. + Work-related tasks may necessitate the use of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), including but not limited to head, foot, hand, torso, respiratory, vision, and hearing protection, in accordance with OSHA, NFPA, and DoD safety standards.
