About the Position The Fire Safety Coordinator provides expert guidance in assessing fire and life safety concerns to protect university resources. The coordinator ensures the safety of campus property and individuals by overseeing fire safety audit activities. Additionally, the role includes responsibilities for environmental protection and other fire-related health and safety activities to support the university community. Responsibilities Inspections, Reporting, and Recordkeeping (50%) Conduct safety inspections, focusing primarily on fire and electrical safety, of institutional facilities, equipment and activities either independently or as a member of a team. Prepares and sends out fire inspection reports noting deficiencies to departments. Follow-up on improvements or activities initiated to ensure that solutions were implemented properly. Review reports and evaluate data concerning public liability accidents, such as fire, and determine the necessity and scope of further investigation. Review University fire safety confidence testing to ensure compliance with codes and regulations. May investigate incidents, accidents, and safety concerns that are brought to the EHS department and determine what corrective action(s) is needed. Maintain appropriate records and files within existing office and records retention procedures, both manually and using a computer. Maintains records and write reports regarding accidents, work-related injuries or illnesses, and safety hazards including such elements as excavation permits, hot work permits and confined space entry permits. Community Liaison (20%) Serves as a point of coordination with the Bellingham Fire Department. Act as a liaison between the University and local, state, and federal safety personnel, community members and contractors concerning environmental health and safety issues as guided by the EHS Director. Implement fire safety improvements and/or other safety activities whenever possible. Manage, coordinate and conduct educational and in-service training programs, and develop and organize associated materials, including hands-on fire extinguisher training and on-campus fire drills in both academic and auxiliary facilities. Recommend modifications or safeguards to minimize fire hazards. Develop, implement and monitor financial, mutual aid or other agreements between the University and other public or private entities. Develop and maintain positive, professional working relationships with members of the campus community and foster cooperation among employees and students. Develop and maintain positive, professional working relationships with members of the local community. May lead or chair sub committees in the development and implementation of the Confined Space Rescue Team training program and others as directed by the EHS Director. Policy Development (15%) Research and correctly interpret local, state and federal safety codes, regulations and findings, including but not limited to the International Fire Code. Advise and develop recommendations and consult with the EHS Director and other staff members to implement recommendations as needed. Provide the EHS Director with information on the current status of activities, findings, recommendations, and the means of implementation of all activities. With guidance from the EHS Director, review information, analyze and evaluate data, and prepare reports concerning safety and health hazards. Develop, recommend, implement, review, and revise policies, plans, procedures and guidance documents relative to fire and life safety to ensure awareness of and compliance with fire and life safety requirements Brings information back to the department and facilitate a decision either independently or involving other EHS staff and/or the Director. Emergency Response (10%) Respond to emergencies including hazardous materials and confined space emergencies as training permits. On occasion, such emergencies may include those during non-business hours. Enters personal access holes, tunnels and confined spaces; transports equipment and instrumentation across campus, generally using state vehicle on public roads. Performs tasks that may require wearing a respirator, including but not limited to, entering spaces with air contaminant levels exceeding the permissible exposure limit; operates training equipment and dons training aids such as personal protective equipment. Alter daily work schedule as required to fulfill position duties without advance notification. Other Duties as Assigned (5%) Use computer hardware and software, such as Microsoft Office suite, to advance the university’s fire safety goals. Ability to answer department phones, responds to inquiries and greets visitors to the EHS department. May direct the work of others. May review engineering and architectural drawings and specifications for building renovations and/or new construction for compliance with safety codes. Performs other safety activities as determined by the EHS Director. This is a part-time (50%), project-employment position ending no later than April 30, 2027. Required Qualifications + A Bachelor's degree in occupational safety and health, safety studies, natural science, business or public administration, education or allied field and three years of professional experience in a work area directly related to fire safety or equivalent education/experience + Excellent writing and communication skills, high level organizational skills, ability to initiate and take projects to completion. + Ability to work collaboratively with the campus and local communities. + Ability and willingness to wear a self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA) or other respirator in emergency situations. + A valid driver’s license. Preferred Qualifications + A Bachelor’s degree in Fire Protection Engineering or related field. + Experience using the Incident Command System. + Experience working effectively in higher education or other complex organization/campus. + Excellent computer and project management skills.
