Summary The primary purpose of this position is to serve as a Firefighter (Hazardous Materials Technician/Basic Life Support) assigned to a crew engaged in airfield and structural firefighting and crash-rescue operations; drive and operate firefighting vehicles of significant complexity to respond to the presence or potential releases of hazardous materials (HAZMAT), for the purpose of stopping or controlling the release, and to conduct performance of noninvasive emergency medical procedures. Responsibilities Drive and operate firefighting vehicles, such as pumpers, aerial ladder trucks, and Airport Rescue Fire Fighting (ARFF) vehicles. Perform crash-rescue and firefighting duties involving air traffic or support operations where hazardous conditions are such that the expectancy for fire is high and potential for becoming destructive is great. Perform pre-fire planning by physically going through structures to become familiar with the layout, fire hazards, and location of fixed fire protection systems. Perform noninvasive emergency procedures: conduct initial and on-going patient assessment and physical examination; maintain airway, breathing, and circulation; determine priority of care and monitor patient's baseline vital signs. Maintain constant awareness of levels in self-contained breathing apparatus and warns other firefighters when tanks are close to empty. Requirements Conditions of Employment Qualifications In order to qualify, you must meet the specialized experience requirements described in the Office of Personnel Management (OPM) Individual Occupational Requirements for 0081, Fire Protection & Prevention. SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE: Applicants must have at least one year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-06 level (or other equivalent pay systems) in federal service which equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills and abilities (KSA's) to perform successfully the duties of the position being filled. Specialized experience is experience gained while performing firefighter duties engaged in structural firefighting, rescue operation, driving and operating firefighter vehicles of significant complexity and assisting in reducing and/or eliminating potential fire hazards to protect persons, property or the environment and performing non-invasive emergency medical procedures. In addition to the qualification requirements above, applicant must possess the following valid nationally recognized firefighter certifications before entrance on duty: Airport Firefighter (includes Firefighter I & Firefighter II) HAZMAT Awareness HAZMAT Operations HAZMAT Technician Apparatus Driver/Operator - Pumper Apparatus Driver Operator - Aircraft Rescue and Firefighting (ARFF) Apparatus Driver Operator - Aerial* Apparatus Driver/Operator - Mobile Water Supply (MWS*) *NOTE: (Required if Aerial and MWS is assigned) KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES (KSAs): Your qualifications will be evaluated on the basis of your level of knowledge, skills, abilities and/or competencies in the following areas: 1. Knowledge of drive and operate firefighting vehicles of significant complexity and of the principles of hydraulics as they pertain to waterflow, water pressure, water levels and line (friction) losses. 2. Knowledge of basic and specialized structural firefighting equipment (fire alarm system operation, fire extinguishing equipment operation, etc.), techniques, and procedures; and of basic and specialized building design, construction and occupancy. 3. Knowledge of HAZMAT emergency response procedures, equipment, identification and mitigation action and ability conduct complete HAZMAT incident analysis. 4. Knowledge of basic life support techniques and protocols and of safety requirements as outlined in applicable safety standards, regulations and/or technical orders. 5. Skill in operating communications equipment. 6. Ability to communicate both orally and in writing. PART-TIME OR UNPAID EXPERIENCE: Credit will be given for appropriate unpaid and or part-time work. You must clearly identify the duties and responsibilities in each position held and the total number of hours per week. VOLUNTEER WORK EXPERIENCE: Refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service Programs (i.e., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student and social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge and skills that can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Education Additional Information Testing Designated Position: This position has been designated by the Air Force as a Testing Designated Position (TDP) under the Air Force Civilian Drug Demand Reduction Program. Employee must pass initial and periodic short notice drug testing.
