City of Gulfport, Mississippi Job Description Firefighter – Recruit(FF) Department: 290 – Fire FLSA Status: Fire Salary Range: $39,590.20 - $49,657.32 Per Mississippi State Statute 21-31-63: Any applicant for a position of any kind under civil service must be a citizen of the United States and an elector of the county in which he resides and must meet only such bona fide occupational residency requirements as may be determined by the civil service commission or the governing authority of the municipality. Position Overview Firefighter Recruit - An employee who has met all requirements and has been accepted as an employee of the Gulfport Fire Department in accordance with Civil Service Rules and Regulations for the City of Gulfport. This employee is listed as Probationary. In order to be hired on as a Firefighter Recruit, the applicant must pass a Civil Service Test. When you apply, you will be notified of the testing dates. Once you pass the Civil Service test, you will then move forward with the physical agility test. If both the Civil Service Test, and the Physical Agility Test is passed, you will move forward with in person interviews. Candidates are selected for hire, upon vacancy. Responsibility This is skilled firefighting work in combating, extinguishing and preventing fires; in answering emergency calls; and in operation and maintenance of fire department equipment, apparatus and quarters. a) Responds on assigned apparatus to fire alarms and other emergency calls. b) Makes forced entries and rescues persons or assists in rescue operations as directed during fires or other emergencies. c) Maintains apparatus, quarters, buildings, equipment, grounds and hydrants. d) May drive departmental vehicles under non-emergency conditions. e) Uses cutting tools, both manual, gas and powered. f) Ventilates buildings, or aircraft as directed, to remove heat, smoke and gases. g) Responds to multi-story fires or rescues, working from ground ladder and aerial apparatus. h) The above examples are intended only as illustrations of the various types of work per- formed in this position. Maintains equipment and apparatus, quarters, buildings, equipment, grounds and hydrants in clean and operable condition. May administer emergency first aid and may drive departmental vehicles under non-emergency conditions. Uses cutting tools, both manual, gas and powered. Responds to multi-story fires or rescues, working from ground ladder and aerial apparatus. Ventilates fires to release heat, smoke and gases in buildings, or aircrafts as directed. Participates in fire prevention, public education and inspection activities as assigned. Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Must posses required knowledge, skills, abilities and experience and be able to explain and demonstrate, with or without reasonable accommodations, that the essential functions of the job can be performed. Has basis knowledge of firefighting methods and modern fire prevention practices. Skilled in the operation and care of fire apparatus and equipment. Able to learn heavy motorized equipment operation and a variety of methods and tasks in firefighting, fire prevention, and related activities. Able to engage in moderate to strenuous physical activity and work long hours during emergency situations Establish and maintain effective working relationships with co-workers, supervisors, and the general public. Understand and follow oral and written instructions. Able to read and interpret a variety of maps, plans, and diagrams. Able to perform detailed report and record maintenance duties. Education and Experience High School graduate or equivalent. Although a previous firefighting experience is desirable it is not required. Required Licenses or Certificates Must possess a valid Mississippi driver's license. Physical Demands and Working Conditions The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. Job includes frequent standing, walking and bending; using arm and back while performing functions of climbing, stooping, kneeling crouching, and occasional crawling. Must be able to routinely lift and/or move a minimum of 50 pounds. Visual acuity is required to see close, color, adjust to focus and depth perception. Hand and eye coordination and manual dexterity necessary to operate equipment. Good hearing ability is critical to adequately perform the functions of this job. Subject to sitting, standing, reaching, walking, twisting and kneeling to perform the essential functions. Physical agility and fitness for performing duties that require potential exertion, i.e., moving victims, climbing ladders. Physical strength and endurance to move and handle objects over prolonged periods of time in hazardous weather, atmospheric, and environmental conditions.
