Overview POSITION SUMMARY: Responsible for performing tasks involving physical labor at building, highway, and heavy construction projects, tunnel and shaft excavations, and demolition sites operating hand and power tools of all types including air hammers, earth tampers, cement mixers, small mechanical hoists, surveying and measuring equipment and a variety of other equipment and instruments, cleaning and preparing sites, digging trenches, cleaning up rubble and assisting other craft workers. Responsibilities ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS: · Performs any combination of following duties to assist in general labor and fire watch duties. · Moves work pieces, tools, and supplies, manually or by hand truck. · Lifts, moves, and holds, or clamps work pieces to table, into jigs, or into position as directed, manually or by using hoist, pry bars, wrenches, hammer, and wedges. · Cleans work pieces to remove impurities, such as slag, rust, and grease, using wire brush, portable grinder, hand scraper, or chemical solutions. · Connects hoses from hand torch to oxygen and fuel gas cylinders or connects cables from power source to electrode holder and work piece or fixture. · Starts engine to activate electric generators. Removes, tags or marks, and moves finished work. · Under supervision, may attach grappling equipment to objects preparatory to movement by crane. · Digs trenches, places shoring, and lowers tools and materials to workers in excavations and vaults. · Gathers tools and supplies to be used at work site, according to instructions. Carries various tools, supplies and equipment. · Assists in maintaining, repairing, rebuilding, and fabricating metal equipment. Learns to maintain equipment. · Learns to work with tools of the trade. · May be required to perform other general maintenance or repair tasks. Obtains stores and safeguards supplies, materials, and equipment · Determines methods and materials needed to accomplish assigned maintenance, repair, or construction. · Perform fire watch and hole watch duties including proper placement of fire blankets, operating fire extinguishers, · Initiates emergency response actions, other duties as required. · Requires working in operating facilities and observing and abiding by additional safety policies and procedures. · Other duties as assigned by Foreman or Superintendent Qualifications EDUCATION AND WORK EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS: · 0-6 months related experience and/or training or equivalent combination of education and experience KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES REQUIRED: · Be knowledgeable of MIC Health and Safety programs and project specific regulations. · When on-site, actively participate in daily toolbox meetings with crews and subcontractors. · Set a personal example of safe behavior. · Read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions and procedure manuals · Add and subtract two-digit numbers, multiply and divide with 10's and 100's and ability to perform these operations using units weight measurement and volume · Common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written or oral form · Ability to work within precise standards of accuracy and follow set procedures and standards · Other may duties may be assigned PHYSICAL DEMANDS: · Work up to a 12-hour shift doing hard physical work in varying temperatures and outside conditions. · May need to maintain physical strength and stamina; Use arms, hands, and legs fully; Push, pull, and frequently lift and carry objects weighing up to 50 pounds; and stoop, kneel, balance, crouch, crawl, and climb to perform job tasks. · Stamina to perform this task repetitively and continuously for several hour intervals. · Uncontrolled environmental conditions: Constant change in weather and site conditions. · This work environment may involve moderate exposure to unusual elements, such as extreme temperatures, dirt, dust, fumes, smoke, unpleasant odors and/or loud noises. · Ability to wear personal protective equipment is required (including but not limited to- safety toed shoes, gloves, safety glasses, hearing protection, hardhat, vest, etc.). · Move in and around confined, cluttered, and uneven areas. · May need to work at heights and must be able to abide by all safety and fall-protection requirements; must be able to wear and utilize all safety equipment required for work at heights. · Evaluate information based on measurable standards; and see details in objects or drawings and recognize slight differences in shapes and shadings. · Visualize objects in three dimensions from drawings. · Keep good balance and work at heights. · See well (either naturally or with correction). · Hear well (either naturally or with correction.) · Coordinate the use of eyes, hands, and feet.
