MercyOne Clinton Medical Center is a Catholic, not-for-profit, full-service community health system serving counties in eastern Iowa and western Illinois. The Registered Nurse First Assistant (RNFA) carries out functions that will assist the surgeon in performing a safe operation with optimal results for the patient. The RNFA practices perioperative nursing and has acquired the knowledge, skills and judgment necessary to assist the surgeon through organized instruction and supervised practice. The RNFA practices under the direct supervision of the surgeon. Serves patients from neonate, infant, pediatric, adolescent, adult and geriatric.
Essential Functions:
Performs preoperative patient assessment and teaching.Collects and analyzes data and assesses patient in developing nursing diagnosis.Provides a safe environment for patient and staff by implementing standards of aseptic technique and by controlling the physical and psychological aspects of that environment.Communicates effectively with the patient, staff, physicians, and families.Maintains knowledge of equipment set-up and function.Prepares for surgical cases in an efficient manner, anticipating needs of patient and surgeon, and provides creative strategies in meeting those needs.Applies knowledge of surgical anatomy, physiology, and operative technique relative to operative procedures wherein the RNFA assists.Provides hemostasis by clamping blood vessels, coagulating bleeding points, legating vessels and by other means as directed by the surgeon.Provides exposure through appropriate use of instruments, retractors, suctioning and sponging techniques.Handles tissue as directed by the surgeon during the operative procedure.Performs wound closure as directed by the surgeon; sutures the fascia, subcutaneous tissue and skin.Applies surgical dressings.Assists with transferring the patient from the operating room.Serves as a resource person to staff and physicians.Functions in circulating or scrub role when not utilized as RNFA.General Requirements:
Possession of a current or compact state license as a registered nurse issued/defined by the State of Iowa.BSN desired.Basic Life Support certified within six (6) weeks of hire. The acceptable credentialing body is the American Heart Association.Proof of completion of Mandatory Reporter abuse training specific to population served within three (3) months of hire.Basic EKG course encouraged.Proficient in perioperative nursing practice both as a scrub nurse and circulating nurse.Current CNOR (Certified Nurse in OR) or obtained with six months of completing RNFA training program.Completion of an RN First Assistant course at an institution approved by the Association of Higher Learning, in which the curriculum addressed all of the content areas of the Core Curriculum for the RN First Assistant and a degree or certificate was awarded.Current CRNFA (Certified Registered Nurse First Assistant) desired.Ability to read, write and speak English language.Want to learn more about MercyOne Clinton?
