Fiscal Technician, School of Law

The University of Virginia School of Law seeks a Fiscal Technician to join its Business Office and support the fiscal operations of the Law School. This is a new position reporting to the Senior Assistant Dean for Business and Finance.

The Business Office supports the Law School’s mission by providing effective, customer service-oriented budget, finance, accounting, and payroll services. We also deliver data-driven insights to aid strategic planning. Our close-knit team is dedicated to offering high-touch support to faculty, staff, and students, ensuring operational efficiency, and fostering a strong sense of community. 

The Fiscal Technician will support the Business Office team by processing financial transactions and providing customer service to faculty, staff, and students. The successful candidate will function well as part of a team, communicate well orally and in writing, and have a strong attention to detail. The successful candidate should be able to maintain confidentiality and always exhibit a professional demeanor.

Specific duties include:

Advise faculty and staff on financial matters and University financial policies and procedures.

Support purchasing and reimbursement requests.

Assist with chart of accounts and transactional coding questions.

Process Workday accounting journals.

Establish appropriate employee payroll costing allocations.

Make payroll accounting adjustments as required.

Assist with accounts receivable and payable transactions.

Support the student employee hiring process to include advising students and keying payroll actions.

Support business office’s roles with student printing and with employee lounge inventories. 

Demonstrate good judgment in handling confidential and sensitive information.

In addition to the above job responsibilities, other duties may be assigned.

Required Qualifications:

High school diploma plus one year of experience; relevant experience may substitute for the degree.

Ability to work independently and as part of a team.

Strong numerical ability, organizational skills, and attention to detail.

Strong oral and written communication skills.

Preferred Qualifications:

Experience with Workday Finance.

Working knowledge of Microsoft Word, Excel, and reporting tools.

Previous experience in a customer service role.

Physical Demands: 

This is primarily a sedentary job involving extensive us of desktop computers. The work supporting printers and lounges requires the ability to lift/push/pull 20 – 50 lbs.  


This is a full-time University Operational and Administrative Staff position with benefits. This position is based at the Law School and is not eligible for remote work.
